Admittedly, Nomos watches have increased ever so slightly in price since the manufacturer entered the industry in 1990. Still, you don’t have to flex your bank card to breaking point when investing in one. The Nomos Ahoi watch collection proves that with its sporty, yet causal and elegant persona, all rolled into one, you can enjoy a firm all-rounder for a reasonable price.
The latest Nomos Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date watch looks just as stylish whether worn on the beach, in the office or whilst enjoying a cocktail or two on a rooftop lounge. The two latest colours to be unveiled by the German watchmaker are the Sky and Sand iterations. As their names suggest, they bring a fresh and uplifting vibe to a summer wardrobe, and with heat waves taking over some of the globe’s most popular tourist destinations right now, it would be silly not to indulge in a luxury watch to keep you looking super cool, even if you’re not feeling it.
The 38.5mm size of the new Nomos Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date Sky and Sand watches is a nice fit for the average wrist. With lengthened lugs that are borrowed from the Nomos Tangente watch collection, however, the watch wears slightly bigger on the wrist, yet thankfully the lug holes are not placed too far apart. The most appealing feature of these two new Ahoi watches for men is their flat-coloured dials which are pretty adventurous for Nomos. Like so many, however, the lilac blue dial features golden lettering under the 12 o’clock location, paired with a vibrant orange sub-seconds hand at 6 o’clock. The Sand option has an alluring grainy texture that has a metallic sheen that also features the same orange accents.
The new 38mm models see the date window moved to 3 o’clock. But wait... It’s huge! Sitting in a matching coloured date wheel, the date function is designed for easy legibility and steals the show from the rest of the dial elements, adding something totally unique to the Ahoi Neomatik range. Even more unusual, is the choice to sit the rectangular window inside the hour track itself, towards the very edge of the dial.
Other features on both the Sky and Sand dials are equally refined and clean. The crisp black Arabic numerals are incredibly slim and are joined by straight central hour and minute hands. The rectangular markers at each hour location and the surface of the hands have all been treated with a glowing green Super-LumiNova material for easy timekeeping at night. These features are all protected underneath a piece of sapphire crystal glass, protecting them from dust, scratch and light damage.
If you love the Nomos Ahoi watch collection and you like your watch to have a date function, the new Nomos Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date Sky and Sand watches are definitely for you. The DUW 6101 automatic movement can set the date forward and backwards all day except for between 23:15 and 00:45 hours. When setting the time, you get the advantage of Nomos’ safety feature – a red band that peeks through, letting you know that the crown has not been fully set back into position. The crown also helps to uphold the case’s 200-meter water-resistant rating.
If you want the opportunity to observe the movement whilst in motion, you can opt for the exhibition caseback version, sealed with a piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. If not, the solid steel caseback provides plenty of options for a specially engraved message should you want to gift this watch to someone special.
The DUW 6101 movement that sits behind the caseback has a proprietary escapement. The super precise Nomos Swing System is part of an incredibly slender movement and is exceptionally slim, sitting inside a case that measures under 10mm for both the closed and sapphire-backed options. It is the first Neomatik Calibre with a date function and features a beautiful blue tempered balance spring, a rubbing polish, tempered screws and a three-quarter plate, along with special sliding gear controls. The movement, with gold-plated embossing on its rotor, provides a power reserve once fully wound of 42 hours.
The Nomos Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date watch in Sand and Sky dial options are each paired with a textile strap - dark grey for the Sand model and black for the Sky model. A stainless steel square winged clasp secures each timepiece comfortably to the wrist.
