Why the Fortis Marinemaster M-40 is the Ultimate Adventurers Watch

We look at the Marinemaster M-40 watches, released by Fortis just before the newly designed M-44 watches of 2022 to identify why they make such great adventure watches.

Last year Fortis released some new Marinemaster watches, designed for exploration on the ground as opposed to those usually tailored to space missions and the aviation industry. The Marinemaster M-40 (released a little while before) and the M-44 watches both have a lot to offer and come in a set of eye-catching colours. I covered the Fortis Marinemaster M-44 watch in more detail here, and if you like those colours (but the M-44 measured a little on the large size) and you don’t need an excessive amount of water resistance, you’ll be pleased to know that the Marinemaster M-40 watch was released prior to these beefier models in similarly playful colours, plus a grey or white dial. They also promise the same level of robustness and the same sporty style despite a lower water resistance. The recent Marinemaster M-44 watches of 2022 and the slightly earlier M-40 watches were built from the ground up by Fortis who was able to flex its imagination and daring nature with the bold colours of these functional and practical releases.

Before I delve into the features of the fortis Marinemaster M-40, I’ll just run through what the larger M-44 watch offers. Truth be told, the Marinemaster M-44 does have some appealing features that the M-40 foregoes, but when you look at the basics of what you really need in a watch if you’re not planning on taking your watch down to daring underwater depths, you may not need those features anyway. But just so you know, the Marinemaster M-44 features a superior water-resistant rating of 500 meters and comes with the Fortis Safety Locking feature, which you can see on the side of the case at 10 o’clock. It could easily be mistaken for a helium escape valve, but just one simple push of this button and it locks the bezel into place. That said, the Fortis Marinemaster, whether the M-44 type or the M-40 type, is not designed as a purpose-built dive watch and it doesn’t feature a unidirectional rotating bezel, it features a bidirectionally rotating bezel, so unless you’re planning on diving with this watch, you may not require the Safety Locking feature. Also, the M-44 watch, as well as measuring an obviously broader size, is powered by a movement made by Kenissi. The self-winding movement, named the WERK 11, is COSC-certified and offers an impressive power reserve of 70 hours.

The Fortis Marinemaster M-40 watch is the little brother of the M-44 model and is a great all-around adventure watch. It comes in a range of four different colours: Snow White, Serenity Blue, Woodpecker Green and Rockstone Grey. Whilst the M-44 watches feature waffle patterned black dials with a shot of colour around the flange and the strap, the smaller M-40 watches make up for their slighter size with a bolder and more daring design. The dials are a block colour, as well as waffle-patterned and have a textured rubber band to match. Alternatively, you can enjoy them on a Block bracelet crafted from recycled stainless steel just like the case. The stick hour markers and central hands on each dial have been treated with Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping at night. The same waffle pattern is present across the face of the dial whilst a date window sits at 3 o’clock. The dial is also equipped with a lollipop second hand.

Inside the centre of the robust and ready-to-go Fortis Marinemaster M-40 watches is the UW-30 automatic movement based on the  Sellita SW200-1. It offers a 38-hour power reserve and a performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also features a Glucydor balance wheel with anti-magnetic properties and sits behind a solid stainless steel caseback within a 300-meter water-resistant case. On the front of the Woodpecker Green, Snow White, Rockstone Grey and Serenity Blue Marinemaster M-40 watches is a strong piece of sapphire crystal glass, enabling a clear view into the dial whether it be worn during the daytime or in hours of darkness.
