The New Seiko Black Series Samurai Limited Edition

Seiko releases another Black Series Limited Edition model of which just 8000 pieces have been made available worldwide. A hardened black-coated steel case and a stealthy black dial afford just one shot of colour for its readable minute hand.

Seiko is not only renowned for its cutting-edge technology (both in the form of its mechanical and quartz-powered movements) but it also has plenty of imagination too. Especially when it comes to naming watches with quirky titles depending on what they look like. The abominable snowman or yeti can be seen in the Seiko Monster – a dive watch that has been reiterated in a new limited edition model this year. The Seiko Tuna – another member of the Black Series trilogy released this year, is named after a tuna can. The Seiko Samurai - a watch that looks like its case has been carved by a slicing Samurai sword is another example. There’s also the Seiko Turtle with a case resembling a shell. Back to the Seiko Samurai though – a watch re-modelled in 2017 from an earlier dive watch. Upon its re-release, the Seiko Samurai was met with resounding success and had a snowball effect upon the Seiko collecting universe.

Today, there are tons of Seiko Samurai dials to choose from. Some of the model’s most distinguishable features include its gnarled bezel edge and matching gnarled crown for an improved grip whilst underwater. Now, Seiko releases the Black Series Samurai Limited Edition watch – one of three new models inspired by night diving. Seiko has manufactured just 8000 pieces of the ref: SRPH11K1, marking a third year running for the Black Series model.

It’s all in the small detail…

Whether we’re talking about an elegant dress watch or a rugged dive watch, sometimes the smallest of details make all the difference to a timepiece. A flourish of colour vaults this Seiko Black Series Samurai watch to the next level with its orange-coloured minute hand, nicely executed against an otherwise all-black dial. Seiko Black Series watches are aggressive and handsome but equally legible. They’re all inspired by night diving and focused on delivering the highest standard of legibility whilst underwater. Legions of Seiko dive watch fans grabbed these former limited edition watches in an instance and it’s anticipated that these three new additions will be met with the same reaction.

Swallowed up and spat out

The ocean absorbs and reflects colour at different wavelengths depending on whether they are high or short. Blue, for instance, is a low wavelength and hardly absorbed at all, so when light hits the surface of the sea, it reflects a blue colour, hence the blue appearance of the ocean. Red is a higher wavelength and is absorbed readily by water. This makes red-coloured objects almost impossible to see whilst underwater, especially those that are 200 meters deep down under its surface. Seiko has designed the dial of the Seiko Black Series Samurai watch to be as legible as possible. The vivid orange minute hand is the only detail enhanced on the dial. All other unnecessary information is eliminated from the dial. The black surface of the display melts away into the darkness of the water, leaving the minute hand to guide the way in collaboration with the watch’s unidirectional rotating bezel.

The new Seiko Black Series Samurai Limited Edition

The Seiko Black Series Samurai Limited Edition SRPH11K1 is a robust and masculine dive tool. Its 43.8mm case is crafted from stainless steel, integrated with a 200M watermark, and treated with a black hardened coating to blend in with the darkness of the sea at night. The front of the case is crafted from Hardlex to afford a clear view into that integral minutes hand. Lumibrite has been used on the hour indexes, the hands and the diving scale on the bezel. At a 13.4mm thickness, the case of the Seiko Black Series Samurai watch is certainly present. Its screwed caseback and screw-down crown help the case to maintain its promised 200-meter water resistance.

The unique serial number of each limited edition piece is engraved onto the back of the case and the watch’s unidirectional rotating bezel rotates one way only to ensure uncompromised diver safety. Inside the rugged and stealth-like case of the new Seiko Black Series Samurai Limited Edition watch is the 4R35 Calibre. The movement, with automatic and manual winding, offers a useful 41-hour power reserve once fully wound and features a legible date display at 3 o’clock on the dial.

There are a lot of Seiko dive watches out there that need that chunky, heavy-duty-looking bracelet, mainly because of their build and chiselled physique. The Seiko Black Series Samurai Limited Edition watch is not one of them. It seems a natural fit for a sporty black rubber strap. This band is a breathable option for wearing whilst partaking in endurance activities or a spot of outdoor exploration. It’s a nice finish to a watch made for a casual wardrobe at the weekend. Step off the deck from a dive and dry off on the rocks, it will dry just as quick as the skin it sits on.
