Oris Launches Hand-Wound Big Crown Pointer Date Watch with Calibre 473 Movement

Equipped for the first time in decades with a hand-wound movement, the new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date watch impresses its fan base with a fresh new model for 2023, equipped with a Cervo Volante deer leather strap and an attractive blue dial – both of which are a match made in heaven for the 38mm size of this collectable stainless steel model from the popular Big Crown watch collection.

For the past ten years, Swiss watch manufacturer, Oris has been honing its attention back towards its deep roots in building open and honest movements. These movements power the brand's finest timekeeping instruments. It was the 1980s when Oris decided to drop quartz watches for good. Abandoning this road and taking a different route was a bold one but soon paid off and became one of the brand's best decisions. It was a belief that quartz watches lacked emotion that spurred Oris to make this bold leap of faith. Despite the brand’s return to mechanical watches, Oris remained true to its promise of manufacturing affordable timepieces.

The basics of watchmaking and the brand’s transparent approach to quality and reliability remained consistently good. In an industry that can often forget that there are genuine watch enthusiasts out there that dream of owning a luxury mechanical watch but can’t afford one, Oris dedicates its contribution to the industry to this purpose. The brand offers a versatile range of timepieces that promise incredible value for money, which brings us to the latest watch to emerge from the company’s line of in-house manufactured movements – the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch with a fresh blue vibe that welcomes in the new year perfectly.

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473

Brand new for 2023, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch is a compact 38mm model crafted from stainless steel that is powered by the brand’s latest hand-wound movement. It follows on from the Calibre 110, the company’s first in-house movement to be released in 2014 after a break from independently manufactured movements. Before the 1980s, Oris had already developed over 280 calibres and it was this authenticity and originality that made Oris such a unique and well-respected company within the luxury watch industry. Although still very much promising the advantages of an affordably priced watch built from the ground up in Oris’ watchmaking facilities, the brand’s timepieces have made a slight and subtle transition into a higher price bracket but have still been received well across the company’s devoted fan base. Having to finance tool development and establish new specifications and engineering concepts comes at a price, but given that these wristwatches offer some incredibly impressive features like a ten-day power reserve and remarkable accuracy, consumers are still getting a lot for their money, which makes this new Oris watch for 2023 an even more appealing proposition.

So, let’s get down to the details. The new Oris Big Crown Calibre 473 is a 38mm stainless steel model developed in the brand’s familiar multi-case construction. It offers a water resistance of 50 meters and features a screwed caseback with a sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature so that you can watch the new calibre at work. The screw-in security crown on the case also upholds the model’s water-resistant capability, whilst a domed sapphire crystal glass front has received anti-reflective technology to both sides of its surface for a clear view into a palpable dusky blue dial. The hour track of the new Oris Big Crown watch is designed traditionally as seen throughout the collection. The Arabic numerals are white and legible and are joined by an outer date scale that is identified by a red triangular arrow-tipped pointer date hand. The tapering central minute and hour hand on the dial have both been treated with a generous layer of Super-LumiNova to assist with referencing the time during the evening or in light-compromised conditions. The new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date watch also features a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, controlled by the Calibre 473 from the inside of the case.

Without a doubt, the new-for-2023 Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch is one of the most attractive models to enter the series. Paired with a genuine olive brown sustainable sourced deer leather strap, the model exudes a very classic and traditional aesthetic on the wrist. The strap also features a stainless steel butterfly clasp and adjustment system and has been produced by Oris’ Swiss partner Cervo Volante. If you wanted to keep track of the Calibre 473’s impressive 120-hour power reserve, you can do that too, via the back of the case. The hand-wound movement promises an accuracy of -3/+5 seconds per day and comes backed by the manufacturer's staggering 10-year warranty. Designed to be simple and easy to produce, as well as easy to assemble, the movement has no rotor and took a total of four years to perfect. Making this model even more desirable, this is the first Big Crown Pointer Date watch to be equipped with a hand-wound movement for decades.
