NEW Watches & Wonders 2024 Release – The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Panda Watch

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Panda watch was launched at this year’s Watches & Wonders 2024 Geneva event, equipped with the watchmaker’s 1970s-inspired Glassbox construction.

TAG Heuer believes the “glass box” revelation will one day become a staple feature amongst its most iconic designs. That seems to be the case. The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph watch is not holding back. The Swiss brand has released a striking panda version of the Carrera Chronograph (which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year) at this year’s Watches & Wonders 2024 showcase. It features the Glassbox design, complete with several other elements that wink to the second generation of the Carrea Chronograph released back in the 1960s. Here it is in more detail.

The latest TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph watch blends historical reverence with cutting-edge design in a release that pays homage to an original model from the late 1960s. As the Carrera Chronograph enters its sixth decade, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer builds on the classical and elegant profile of the world-recognised icon, appealing yet again to motorsport fans, chronograph watch collectors and racing enthusiasts alike.

The Carrera watch is named after the famous Carrera Panamericana road race, with a unique and impactful aesthetic that is geared towards those who thrive off the adrenaline of the racetrack. Its legible design and impressive accuracy commended itself to the hearts and wrists of watch collectors all over the world when the first iteration was launched. That first generation was powered by a hand-wound Valjoux movement and came in different variations, including a silver or black dial. When the second generation arrived during the late 1960s, it came in one of two versions. A silver dial with black sub-dials (the panda design) or the reverse, featuring a black dial with sub-counters filled with silver (the reverse panda). The ref 7753 SN with a silver panda dial is what inspires this new Carrera Chronograph of 2024. The very same vintage model was even worn on the wrist of Matt Damon as he played Carol Shelby in the 2019 film, Ford V Ferrari. It featured enhanced stripes running down the centre of its hands and hour markers to improve legibility. Double stops at 12 o’clock were also added to make it clear when the chronograph hand was zeroed. The white hands and markings on the black counters also enhanced clarity. The SN in its name represented “silver” and “noir”, constituting the silver and black dial design. This expression of the perfect motorsport watch, designed by Jack Heuer, is celebrated today in the latest release  - the new 2024 TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Panda Watch.

Today’s Carrera Catalogue

Today, the Carrera watch by TAG Heuer is one of the brand’s most popular and recognisable designs. All of the watches from the collection take design cues from the first watch released by the Maison back in 1963, designed by Jack Heuer himself. The watch set itself apart with its exceptional readability and its precision. The collection today comprises Heuer 01 and Heuer 02 iterations. The New TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Panda Watch

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Panda is a firm nod to the original 7753 SN model launched at the end of the 1960s. It promises the same dedication to readability and precision, with its legible dial and in-house movement. One of the biggest differences in the new design is its addition of the new Glassbox construction, which sits above black azure sub-dials at 3 and 9 o’clock. The silver sunray brushed dial forms a perfect backdrop for these features, along with red lacquered sub-dial hands that pop against the display, amplifying the contrast between these textures and shades all the more.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph watch of 2024 is crafted from stainless steel and measures 39mm in diameter. The width of the case is met with a thickness of 13.86mm and the construction also promises a 100-meter water resistance. The topped Glassbox structure is reminiscent of TAG Heuer watches of the 1970s and complements the design of this new Carrera watch perfectly. Its design creates a seamless flow over the top of the tachymeter scale which runs around the edge of the dial. A cohesive aesthetic is achieved thanks to the contrasting black sub-dials and rhodium-coated indexes. Now, from a wider range of angles, the legibility of the dial is guaranteed – enhanced further by anti-reflective properties applied to the surface of the sapphire crystal glass itself.

The panda configuration of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph watch is a playful mix of red lacquered accents, black azurage counters, silver sunray surfaces, and black and rhodium-coated appliques. All together, the redesigned model, intertwined with the Glassbox construction, gives off a contemporary elegance, whilst also nodding to vintage elements of the retro 1960s racing watch. Upon turning the watch over, you’ll be able to observe the mechanics of the beautifully crafted TH20-00 movement, equipped with a bi-directional winding construction and a shield-shaped rotor. The exhibition window gives way to the in-house movement as it performs meticulously and effortlessly, delivering a performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 80 hours once fully wound. The autonomy and authenticity of the movement are further enhanced by a manufacturer guarantee of 5 years.

Those who are fans of the TAG Heuer Connected watch will be pleased to hear that the new Carrera Chronograph Panda is now available as a customisable dial face on the smartwatch. The new model also comes fitted on a stainless steel three-link bracelet.
