New for 2023: The Squale 1521 Green Ray and Bronze Watches

The new Squale 1521 Bronze and Green Ray watches have been released into the popular collection for 2023. Both models share many qualities but do offer some different features too. This article explores both designs along with their differences to help you decide which model to opt for this summer.

Key features of the Squale 1521

Whether you’re new to collecting Squale 1521 watches or not, what you’ll note is the shape of the case, which all models from the collection have in common. The arching case shape has squared-off lugs that give the watch a distinctive look. Squale started out supplying cases and watch parts to third parties but began developing dive watches of its own in the 1970s. The 1521 is a very classic diver-style watch that comes in a few different formats, borrowing the identity of the company founder’s first official dive watch. The brand has updated the range this year, offering the 1521 Classic COSC in the brand’s signature blue dial or a more traditional black – each one fitted with a COSC-certified Sellita movement. You can check these watches out here. They come with aluminium bezels that match their dial colours and a case finish that combines brushed effects with polished chamfers.

In addition to this, Squale has also released the new 1521 Full Luminous Militaire watch. As its name suggests, the model features a fully luminous dial although this time not made from C3 Super-LumiNova but a BGW9 dial for a nice bright white finish. You can read up on this model, available on a black rubber band or a Milanese-style stainless steel bracelet here. Lastly, Squale has released a green degrade version of its 50ATM watch. This version of the 1521 model boasts a Spanish green centre that melds into a rich black around the edge of the dial, alongside a Bronze version with a captivating blue dial. Whilst the Green Ray watch features the signature crown located at 4 o’clock, the bronze model sees the crown moved to the 2 o’clock location. But there are more differences to come...

The new Squale 1521 Green Ray and Bronze watches

Of course, one of the key differences to note about the two models is that the Green Ray watch is crafted from stainless steel, whilst the Bronze is pretty self-explanatory – a case made from bronze. Both models measure a 42mm diameter and are powered by the Sellita SW200-1 Calibre, which performs at a rate of 28, 800 vibrations and offers a power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound. Interestingly, as well as the relocation of the crown to 2 o’clock in the bronze model, the date has moved there too. The bezel, although unidirectionally rotating like the Green Ray model, has deeper grooved teeth on the bezel and a brushed ceramic insert as opposed to the black anodised aluminium material seen on the Green Ray model. If that wasn’t enough, the new Bronze 1521 watch also wears chunkier with an increased depth of 1.5mm. On the dial, you’ll also see rounder appliques.

Perfect for a dive watch, the bronze material used for the design of the Squale 1521 Bronze is perfect for use underwater, since it is resistant to saltwater corrosion. On the other hand, the Green Ray model from Squale, crafted from brushed and polished stainless steel, comes fitted on a choice of two bands – a green leather band crafted in Italy or a black leather option. The 1521 Bronze watch, however, is fitted on a blue leather strap to match the colour of the dial and its surrounding ceramic bezel.

Whether you’re drawn to the unique colour scheme of the 1521 Bronze watch or the captivating richness of the green degrade dial of the Green Ray watch, all models are water-resistant to 500 meters and are fitted with a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front.

As with all 1521 watches from Squale, the green Ray and Bronze models express a quirky character. They both boast a vibrant orange trimmed minute hand that can easily be seen whilst under daring depths of water. The choice to include blue, bronze and orange accents in the Bronze 1521 watch is certainly “out there” and bold but also incredibly unique. Paired with a reliable movement and a robust case construction, both the Green Ray and Bronze 1521 models will make an ideal companion for water-based activities, swimming, diving and sports.
