NEW Boldr Watch Releases for 2023

You might already have a personal opinion on what defines a value-for-money watch, but I’d urge you to reconsider if you haven’t yet taken a look at Boldr watches. Here are the latest three releases from the young Singapore-based watch brand.

Boldr is one of them watch brands that has a quirky little back story that you might want to bring up over a few drinks at the bar with pals. It’s a really young brand that was founded by a young entrepreneur. Leon Leong loved wearing his smartwatch whilst he was out adventure-seeking, hiking and enjoying his favourite hobby – bouldering (hence the name of his watch brand). But there was one problem. Every time he used his smartwatch, it would run out of juice before the day was up. Frustrated by this, he had a vision to create his own smartwatch brand. This concept was backed by supporters of his Kickstarter campaign. The trouble was, the Boldr Voyage watch, with its two separate batteries (one for keeping time and one for feeding the smartwatch functionality) required more funding than Leong had anticipated. Whilst Leong began to refund his backers, he was met with further support. Investors loved the design of his watches and suggested he created the watch but without the smartwatch technology. So that’s what he did. Boldr is going strong these days with plenty of designs that are affordable and practical. There are very few watches on the market that offer a titanium case, sufficient water resistance, a sapphire crystal glass front and an automatic movement. Boldr’s first watch was the Journey – to mark the ups and downs of the brand before it successfully launched in 2016.

The three recent releases from Boldr each offer something different. The Venture Wayfarer-Olive watch is a tribute to the classic 24-hour sub-dial watch and features a striking military green colour that gives it a tool-like appeal. The Ranger Kopje is a Safari Ranger watch inspired by ancient rocks found in the Serengeti. The Ranger Upepo is another Ranger watch but with a stunning sandy-coloured dial that has been inspired by the hot African plains. All three of these watches have a few things in common, including a 200-meter water resistance and an automatic movement. Let’s look at each watch separately…

The Boldr Venture Wafarer-Olive watch

The Venture Wayfarer-Olive watch from Boldr is a 38mm titanium model with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front and a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock with a custom-embossed Boldr logo. This feature enables the watch to uphold its 200-meter water resistance for the Miyota 8217 automatic movement. The self-winding engine with hacking seconds beats at a rhythm of 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 42 hours. Upon its khaki green-coloured dial is a printed matte surface that provides the perfect backdrop to a set of custom-made hands with Japanese luminous material applied to their surface. The seconds hand also features a touch of orange colour around its rectangular pip at the top and glides over a 24-hour sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The Arabic numeral hands stand out with legibility during the night thanks to more luminous material and the dial is made complete with a date window at 3 o’clock and a detailed minute track around the edge of the dial. The 24-hour sub-dial on a watch has always been a useful feature, even more so during a time when there were no mobile phones or modern technology to assist explorers, miners and rescue teams with an accurate tracking of time. The Boldr Venture Wayfarer-Olive watch is completed on a tough green nylon strap with a matching titanium buckle. Lastly, the back of the watch is embossed with some special limited edition engraving upon its surface – yet another feature that makes this affordable Boldr explorer watch even more desirable.

The Boldr Ranger Kopje

The Boldr Ranger Kopje watch is a 40mm model crafted from 316L stainless steel. It takes its name from the 500 million-year-old piles of ancient rocks that are found scattered around the Serengeti from the Ngorongoro volcanic eruption. The rich and fertile soil that surrounds these rocks is an ecosystem for many living creatures, which makes the area a busy environment for predators. The rich blue dial of the Ranger Kopje watch from Boldr is known as the Californian dial and features beige-coloured hour numerals in a mix of stick, Arabic and Roman numerals, not to mention chunky sword-shaped hands, all of which sit underneath a flat piece of sapphire crystal with lashings of luminous material. The screw-down crown, which maintains a 200-meter water-resistant case, has a grooved surface to aid grip. Four species of animal have been meticulously etched into the surface of the stainless steel caseback of this watch and are accompanied by a sapphire-exhibition feature. They serve as a reminder to conserve the world’s wildlife population. The watch is powered by a popular Seiko movement – the NH35A Automatic, which provides a 41-hour power reserve and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The new Boldr Ranger Kopje watch is fitted on a deep blue Nylon strap and a stainless steel buckle to finish.

The Boldr Ranger Upepo

The Boldr Ranger Upepo watch stands for “wind” in Swahili, which determines migrant patterns between the months of April and December each year. The name is also used in reference to the summer breeze that sweeps across the African plains, known as “'kupunga upepo'. The 40mm stainless steel model boasts a sandy beige-coloured dial with luminous hour markers and hands. The Boldr name stands out in black underneath a flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front. The same random four animal engravings feature on the back of this model, along with a sapphire exhibition caseback to admire the performance of the Seiko movements once more. The steel explorer watch is equipped with 200-meter water resistance and is finished on a beige nylon strap and a stainless steel buckle that has been engraved with the unique Boldr logo to match the screw-down crown.
