Meet the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic Watch

In light of Zodiac turning 140 years old this year, the brand has been celebrating by reaching a few firsts, mainly with its material experimentation in the expansion of its Super Sea Wolf watch collection. The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf watch now receives a hardened ceramic case with a steel core for optimal strength and durability.

When the original Sea Wolf dive watch by Zodiac was released in 1953, it was the first to be fitted with a rotating dive bezel and superseded that of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms dive watch ever-so-slightly with a 339-feet water resistance versus the Blancpain’s 300-feet water resistant capability. Its successor to the line was the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf, which arrived in the 1970s, becoming one of the most popular commercial dive watches in history. In 2001, the Sea Wolf and Super Sea Wolf watches were reinvented when Fossil acquired the brand, including the release of additional watches to the Skin collection like the Super Sea Wolf 53, equipped with the STP 3-13 movement, manufactured by Swiss Tech Production – Zodiac’s sister company.

In 2021, Zodiac released four new models with a classic black and steel aesthetic. One featured a 316L stainless steel case with a black DLC (diamond-like carbon) coated bezel insert. Another was the brushed stainless steel model with a matching steel bracelet and a black enamel insert on the top ring. These two watches were accompanied by a further two models from the Sea Wolf Compression category. One with a steel case and a black enamel dial with orange accents and a surrounding black ceramic bezel insert. The other model recalls the deepest and darkest depths of the ocean floor with a stealthy black-on-black design. A black DLC-coated case with a grainy texture is paired with a matching black rubber strap to achieve the ultimate tool watch style. These four models from last year demonstrate Zodiac’s innovative approach to watchmaking and its experienced, daring use of different materials. In that same vein, the new Zodiac Sea Wolf Ceramic watch is sure to impress with its sleek black and blue look.

Underscoring Zodiac’s use of innovative watch materials is the new case of the Super Sea Wolf watch. The new dive watch has a technical and dynamic look that bridges the gap well between a contemporary weekend watch and a reliable dive tool. To suffice in deep and daring underwater exploration, Zodiac equips the new Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch with a robust steel core and a surrounding scratch-resistant and durable ceramic material shell in black that is polished upon its surface to create a wholly modern look on the wrist. This super-futuristic aesthetic of the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch for 2022 is paired with a manageable 40mm diameter and integrated with 200-meter water resistance. Angled-down lugs make for a comfortable fit on the wrist, whilst the screw-down crown and screw-down caseback help to uphold the water resistance of the case. Working from the outside in, the new men’s Zodiac dive watch features a luminous pip at 12 o’clock on a glossy black ceramic bezel, followed by a mix of stick and triangular markers to underscore the first 15 minutes of the 60-minute bezel scale. At the 6 o’clock location of the bezel, you get a 30-minute marking identified in a matching white hue to marry with the white elements on the dial itself.

The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch features a clear and legible date window at 3 o’clock on a sleek and deep midnight blue sunburst dial, along with white luminous-coated baton markers around the hour track and a white minute scale. The Zodiac Sea Wolf lettering is accompanied by the brand logo at 12 o’clock and the entire surface of the dial is protected by a piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The hypoallergenic and scratch-resistant ceramic case is engineered by sintering non-metallic powders at extreme high temperatures – a process that is used in the aeronautics industry. The central hour and minute hands have a grey and black frame respectively and are filled with Super-LumiNova in the middle. This luminous material, along with the hour markers, glows in a rich bluey-green hue at night, making timekeeping incredibly easy underwater too.

Inside the steel and ceramic case of this new stealthy Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic dive watch is the STP 1-11 calibre. A clue to this is found on the dial side, with the white “AUTOMATIC CHRONOMETER” lettering emblazoned to the surface of the dial at 6 o’clock. Produced, once again, by the Swiss Technology Production company, the movement is comparable to the likes of the Sellita SW200-1 and ETA 2824-2. It comprises 26 jewels and produces a 44-hour power reserve. The automatic movement also promises an impressive accuracy of -3 seconds per day to +7seconds per day.

Limited in a run of just 500 pieces worldwide, the hardened case of the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch is paired with the soft scents of vanilla used in the watch’s black rubber band. The hypoallergenic tropic vanilla scented caoutchouc 20mm rubber strap is fitted with a pin-style buckle.
