Junghans Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years Limited Edition Review

2021 marked a huge milestone for German watch manufacturer Junghans as they celebrated 160 years of watchmaking excellence. In honour of their birthday, they treated Junghans fans and luxury watch collectors alike with the release of the new Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years Limited Edition. Featuring a full 18 carat rose gold case, smooth silver dial and manual winding movement, the limited edition of 160 pieces is the perfect embodiment of Junghans’ sophisticated heritage.

Junghans was founded in Schramberg in 1861 by Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law Jakob Zeller-Tobler. Together, they began manufacturing clock parts before eventually launching their fist timepiece five years later. From there, the brand grew into a horological powerhouse making history with the likes of the world’s first radio controlled table clock, pilots watches for the German air force and the Junghans Max Bill collection designed in collaboration with Swiss designer Max Bill whose creations embodied the design philosophy known as Bauhaus. Talking of Bahaus, the Junghans Meister series takes its name from the German word for “master” in honour of the design and technical prowess the brand has developed over its years in the industry. It’s iconic, minimalistic approach has made it one of the brand’s best-selling collections and today, it receives an extension in the form of the Junghans Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years Limited Edition.

As a tribute watch, the Junghans Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years has a few clever tricks up in sleeves that journey us back to the German watch brand’s past. The more obvious one of these is its J620 hand wound calibre which is actually a vintage Junghans movement given a new full rose-gold plating makeover. And don’t worry, despite its antique value, the movement has been disassembled and serviced by Junghans to ensure it promises the same reliability and accuracy as their modern-day calibres. As you’d expect, due to nature of the vintage movement, the Junghans Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years watch is very limited with only 160 pieces being made.

Also adding to the value of the Junghans Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years Limited Edition is it’s breathtaking 18 carat rose gold case. It measures to 39 millimetres in diameter and 10.3 millimetres in height securing firmly and comfortably to the wrist by a black leather strap equipped with a matching solid gold pin buckle. The case also boasts domed sapphire crystal glass treated to anti-reflective coating on both sides and a five-times screwed down case back water resistant to 100 metres. The case back is also protected by a layer of sapphire crystal, this one revealing the workings of the rose gold plated hand winding movement housed inside. Also, worth noting, the movement promises a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

At the centre, the Junghans Meister Signatur Handwound 160 Years watch opts for a crisp silver dial treated to smooth matte finishing and two lovely dauphine shaped hands for hours, minutes and seconds in the same shade of gold. Around the edge, matching gold faceted indexes and a dotted diamond-cut track mark the minutes. A nice touch on the dial is the replacement of the Junghans watch logo with the new signature an exact replicate of the original Junghans watches completed during the 1860’s.
