The limited edition Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time GMT watch, created exclusively for Hodinkee, pays homage to the ruler of international flights during the golden era of travel. It features the signature white and blue livery of the international airline and comes equipped with all the major world cities for tracking time anywhere in the world. It also features a distinctive blue GMT hand and a 24-hour scale in black.
The fresh and vibrant design of the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time GMT watch signifies a time when travelling the skies was a luxurious experience. Before economy flights were a thing. Before legroom was reduced and baggage fees became the norm. This era from the 1950s through to the 1970s was the golden age of air travel. Pan Am was ruling international skies after growing from a regional airline to an international giant. Representing a period known for travelling in style, the luxurious Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time GMT watch features a crisp white dial framed by a bright blue bezel. The white and blue colourway pays homage to the airline and continues with the brand’s zest for colour throughout the Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT series. Earlier last year, Zodiac released a grey dial with a black bezel version and a white dial with a red bezel. Following this, a muted black dial version came with a red GMT hand to match the red GMT hand in the former two models.
This new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time GMT watch is a limited edition release exclusively created for Hodinkee that pays homage to the Super Sea Wolf design launched during the 1950s and 1970s – an era that was challenged by the quartz crisis. Having struggled to overcome the pressure within the mechanical watch industry following this crisis, Zodiac faced great difficulties but relaunched in 2015 with the help of Fossil.
In this innovative Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time limited edition watch, the red GMT hand is replaced with a Pan Am blue coloured hand to pair nicely with its surrounding blue bezel. At the centre of the white opaline dial, a globe-inspired pattern can be admired. Within this section is the blue Pan Am logo at 6 o’clock, balanced by the recognisable Zodiac logo at the 12 o’clock location. The Super Sea Wolf World Time lettering is executed in a stylized font in black just below this and these features are all framed by an hour track represented by rectangular indexes treated with a generous helping of Super-LumiNova. The hands too are treated with this same luminous material, enabling the wearer to access the time when travelling during the night. The seconds hand features a rectangular motif filled with Super-LumiNova to mirror the tip of the blue GMT hand. A date window is also provided at 3 o’clock. The striking blue and white aesthetic of this new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf watch reinforces the instantly recognisable logo of Pan Am airlines but also creates an eye-catching and unusual addition to the collection.
A 24-hour scale for the GMT function is outlined in black around the edge of the dial. This scale is framed nicely by the world cities in white upon a rich blue bezel. The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time GMT watch is powered by the Swiss Soprod C125 movement. This reliable engine has been used by Zodiac before and provides a useful power reserve once fully wound of 42 hours. It sits inside a robust stainless steel case measuring a diameter of 40mm. A mix of brushed and polished effects across the surface of the steel case adds depth and detail to the design, whilst a sapphire crystal glass front protects the display from dust, debris, denting, scratching, moisture, heat and light damage. Within the Zodiac presentation box for this limited edition Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ‘Pan Am’ World Time GMT watch is a white and blue utility strap that provides a nice alternative to the robust stainless steel bracelet already fitted to the watch. In addition to this you also get a Pan Am patch and a cleaning cloth for the watch’s sapphire glass front, adorned with a world time zone map and historic Pan Am flight paths.
