Introducing the DOXA Army Watch in Steel

The new DOXA Army watch in stainless steel follows on from the recently released black ceramic model and now comes in two variations; one with a steel bezel and a black insert and one with a bronze bezel with a hunter green insert

Earlier this year, DOXA released the DOXA Army watch, limited to a mere 100 pieces. It followed a recent recognition from the Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport DDPS, Viola Amherd – the Federal Councillor of Swiss Army Combat Divers. The watch, a reinvented classic of the Army SUB watch, was presented by Army Major (S2) Robert Hilty, who had attended his official naming ceremony with the original DOXA Army watch strapped to his wrist. The new re-edition captures the history of the brand and now comes in a stainless steel version as opposed to the black ceramic version released earlier this year. Meet the new DOXA Army steel watch for 2022.

It’s a known fact to many that DOXA was responsible for making the first dive watch accessible to the public in 1967 by creating an affordable dive tool that promised all the essential features one would expect in a professional scuba dive watch. When the DOXA SUB concept was born with the SUB 300 and SUB 300T models, it brought with it an innovative unidirectional rotating bezel, engraved with the US Navy’s no-compression dive calculating marks upon its surface. With this feature, there would be no need for any inconvenient decompression stops before resurfacing after a dive. What became the trademark for DOXA as a dive watch brand, however, was the iconic bright orange dial still used in modern DOXA SUB watches today.

When the SUB 300T was adopted by the Swiss Army for its special force of military divers in the late 1960s, it marked the beginnings of a very fruitful partnership. The watch differed from previous DOXA SUB watches with its matte black case and diving bezel. Combined with this new case aesthetic was a striking beige-coloured dial. The recent black ceramic DOXA Army watch released earlier this year marked a five-decade anniversary of the original release and featured a black ceramic case that replaced the former oxidised treatment atop of a stainless steel case. The only other modification was the replacement of the tritium lume on the dial, replaced by Super-Lumi-Nova. Now it’s time to shine a light on the next chapter of the DOXA Army story…

The new DOXA Army stainless steel watches

The new stainless steel DOXA Army watch is a non-limited version of the former ceramic model released back in April. Now crafted in its original stainless steel, but this time with no black coating, it has been one of the most anticipated releases by fans of the famous dive watch brand for years. The new release is available in two different versions. One features a steel bezel with a contrasting black insert, the other bezel is crafted from bronze, filled with a hunter green insert – the latter of which is a first for the brand. Both models are still based on the specifications of the SUB 300 and SUB 300T watch, developed for the Swiss Army back in 1967.

The new DOXA Army watch is machined from a single block of 316L stainless steel. It measures a confident 42.5mm diameter and has been topped with a piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with layers of anti-reflective technology. Its 11.95mm-thick case is also integrated with an impressive 300-meter water resistance, making it an ideal companion for plenty of underwater exploration. The dial of this new DOXA Army watch is equipped with a very legible hour and minute hand that stands out vastly against a matte beige dial. The central section of both hands is coated with Super-LumiNova, enabling it to illuminate in a rich green glow, along with the chunky rectangular-shaped hour markers. Optimal readability is therefore granted underwater as well as during the night.

Behind the solid caseback of the new stainless steel DOXA Army watch for 2022 is the Sellita SW200-1 movement. The self-winding calibre performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and produces a useful power reserve of 38 hours. One element that really adds a true retro edge to this new DOXA Army watch, however, is its beads-of-rice stainless steel bracelet. It wraps comfortably around the wrist, securing into place with a robust folding clasp engraved with the iconic DOXA fish logo. If you prefer the rubber band option, you can enjoy the new DOXA Army watch on a smooth black or green FKM rubber strap, the latter of which looks incredibly striking when worn on the bronze bezel with the hunter green insert. There’s also an additional NATO camouflage strap that compliments the special camouflage pattern seen on the case of the watch, which nods to the original field uniform worn by the Swiss Army at the time.
