Cuervo Y Sobrinos is known for its exotic roots. The brand with Cuban origins dates all the way back to the 19th century but its renaissance over recent years has seen plenty of designs centred around the Historiador collection – the manufacturer’s cornerstone range. This family plays on mid-century pre-Castro Cuba and features a distinctive lug design that follows a claw-like form. Adding to this line is the new Cuervo Y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias, inspired by the northwest region of Spain where the company founder, Ramón Fernández Cuervo lived before he emigrated to Cuba. A special dial for the new Historiador Asturias watch
The new Cuervo Y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias watch is a simple time and date watch, equipped with a more powerful La Joux-Perret movement. It pays homage to the brand’s history when Ramón Fernández Cuervo set up a jewellery store in the Cuban capital having sailed to Havana and was later joined by his two nephews some twenty years later. From there it became known for its high-end Swiss watches, as well as selling watches made by other renowned watch brands in the industry.
The story of the new Historiador Asturias watch from Cuervo Y Sobrinos begins with a stainless steel case with a polished finish and a modest 40mm diameter. The case sides of the model are a mixture of fluid, curving slopes and lines, enhanced all the more by a set of distinctive-looking lugs that claw down towards the wrist. This model – a declaration of love for the founder's home - is brought to life by the watch’s anthracite dial with an exquisite sunray finish. This restrained smoky dial is both unusual and alluring. Could it be a subtle nod to Havana’s rich heritage in authentic cigars?
The classic spirit of the Historiador filters through this design with a three-handed date design, whilst the 40mm case brings the watch into a more contemporary realm. The jutting lugs distil an air of dressiness whilst sitting at a height of 9.9mm on the wrist. The domed sapphire crystal glass that caps the top of the watch, promising scratch-resistant and anti-reflective properties, is somewhat vintage, welcoming light to flirt with the grey shades of the display. The sober and elegant shade of the gradient dial is subtle and understated. The fume effect intensifies a sunray brushed effect as well as thicker, faceted indices around the hour track at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The rest of the indices are slim and refined, joining a crest at 12 o’clock that boasts the well-recognised logo of the brand. These rhodium-coated elements also accompany a truncated marker at 6 o’clock, which gives way to the rectangular date window set against a rich black background. The central hour and minutes hands that are lozenge-style are joined by an ultra-slim second hand.
The hands gliding across the surface of this fume anthracite dial are powered by an exciting movement based on a calibre supplied by La Joux-Perret. The Calibre CYS-5124 is a modified version of the La Joux-Perret Calibre G-100. It promises an improved power reserve of 68 hours. Centrally mounted on a ball bearing, it performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and is adorned with Cotes de Geneva decoration that is put on show through a transparent sapphire glass exhibition caseback.
The new Cuervo Y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias watch is fitted on a stylish matte black cordovan leather strap with a polished stainless steel buckle and an open-worked Cuervo Y Sobrinos clasp. A spring bar mechanism will also facilitate the easy adjusting of one strap over to another without the need for any additional tools.
