Hands-on with the new Junghans Meister Chronoscope Green Watch

Bowl-shaped chronograph counters that dip into a sumptuous fir-green sun-brushed dial make stopwatch features in this new Junghans Meister Chronoscope watch effortless to utilise. The new rich green addition to the line is fitted to a luxurious light brown ostrich leather strap that softens the feel of the watch, making it a perfect companion for every day of the week.

Despite multiple changes in ownership, Junghans has maintained pretty steady trading since it began in 1861 having been founded by watchmaker, Erhard Junghans. In the early 1900s, it became one of the largest watch and clock factories in the entire world, manufacturing around 3 million timepieces a year! Some of its earlier in-house made movements were fitted to the first watches of the Meister series, as well as the Max Bill series inspired by Bauhaus styles. Influences extracted from earlier Meister watches as well as Max Bill watches can be seen in the design of the brand’s most recent Meister Chronoscope watch.

The first Junghans Meister Chronoscope was released back in 2011 and boasts an understated yet elegant design with a day-date feature and legible chronograph counters. There have since been white, deep blue and dark grey iterations, as well as gold PVD-coated models. This newest iteration of the Meister Chronoscope watch comes in a stainless steel case with a compounding deep green dial. Incorporating many popular elements of the Meister Chronoscope watch, the new family member to join this series has the archetypal pointed hands and applied indexes. It is, however the concept of having a reliable yet classic-looking chronograph on hand for whenever you may need it that makes the Meister Chronoscope watch such an invaluable tool for any Junghans fan.

The new Junghans Meister Chronoscope watch with a fir-green dial

The new Junghans Meister Chronoscope watch boasts a palpable curved fir-green dial executed in a sun-brushed finish. The specific shade of green that delivers the time precisely and crisply is a nod to the manufacturer’s roots. Whilst the chronograph counters are bowl-shaped, the stick hour markers are needle-fine giving rise to the sword-shaped central hour and minute hands that taper to a sharp fine point. Golden-coloured hands can be seen in the centre of each of the chronograph sub-scales – one at the 6 o’clock location to offer a 12-hour function, one at 9 o’clock for the small running seconds, and one at 12 o’clock for the 30-minute totaliser. The quarterly hours around the hour track are a touch thicker than the rest of the stick markers, whilst the central hour and minute hands have been treated with an environmentally friendly luminous material to assist with timekeeping at night or in low-light conditions. Contrasting in a different tone altogether, the day and date aperture, displayed in their own individual windows, are set against a black backdrop, accompanying the famous Junghans lettering.

The stainless steel case of the watch is integrated with 50-meter water resistance and features a tough dome-shaped piece of sapphire crystal glass, treated with anti-reflective material to protect the dial from heat, moisture, light and dust damage. The case measures a diameter of 40.7mm and a height of 13.9mm. The back of the case is fitted with a piece of mineral glass that grants a clear view into the Calibre J880.1 in motion. This automatic movement is based on a Sellita movement and delivers a power reserve of 48 hours. Through this exhibition window, it features rhodium-plated finishes, blued steel screws, a wheel train, a balance bridge, and a diamond cut effect on the barrel, as well as an engraved logo on the surface of its rotor.

Softer and lighter-wearing, the new fir-green coloured Junghans Meister Chronoscope watch is fitted on a light ostrich leather band. Its beige tones compliment the golden accents seen in the hands of the chronograph sub-counters, creating an elegant and timeless finish on the wrist. This ostrich leather band, which also conveys a strong sense of luxury, is fitted on a stainless steel pin buckle stamped with the famous Junghans logo.
