Hands-on with the Meistersinger N.03 White Watch

The new Meistersinger N.03 celebrates the collection’s original and well-recognised design with a single needle-like hand revolving across a traditional white dial, propelled by a reliable automatic movement.

Meistersinger has always been renowned for its unique single-handed approach to timekeeping. This unusual way to reference the time has become a signature look for the Munster-based watchmaker. Distilling the essence of German watch manufacture, these traditional instrument-inspired designs extend on the concept of ancient timekeeping systems, like the use of sundials and by doing so, they reintroduce a simple and relaxed way of tracking the time without any unnecessary clutter or distracting features. The minutes and seconds matter not so much when it comes to wearing a Meistersinger watch and this method runs throughout all the key collections conceptualised by Meistersinger, including those with additional complexity such as the Bell Hora, the Astroscope and the Perigraph.

This time last year, Meistersinger gave the N.03 a new look and introduced some additional features for the dial. Whilst the 40mm models kept the same case design with brushed and polished finishes, the same Meistersinger-signed pull-out crown for manually winding, and the same sapphire crystal glass sealed to the back and front of the watch – there were some discreet differences too. The single hand still revolved around the dial of this modified N.03 Meistersinger watch but the outer perimeter of the dial had received a ring that showed indications around the hour track as a single dot or line and the hallways mark between each hour location as a “30”. The use of the additional ring was to help distinguish the quarter, half and full hour increments. The details were seen in white or black and with cognac elements – the latter of which was repeated in the circular date window at 6 o’clock. It was also housed in a smaller diameter of just 40mm compared to its former 43mm variations.

Since the N.03 is the younger sibling of the N.01, there are similarities shared between both models. On that note, the German watchmaker has also released a new version of the N.01, which I covered in a little more detail here. Despite these innovative modifications last year, the latest N.03 watch by Meistersinger is similar in design to older versions of the watch. It returns to its 43mm size and measures a depth of 11.5mm. Its stainless steel case has received a mix of brushed and polished finishes, which give way to a prominent crown at 3 o’clock that can easily be pulled out. Unlike the manually wound N.01 watches, the N.03 is fitted with an automatic movement that is exposed through a sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature.

The dial of the new Meistersinger N.03 watch also returns back to its original design, stripping things back to basics with a single track around the periphery of the display, characterised by dashes that mark out the minutes. Longer dashes represent the halfway mark between each hour location, whilst the main hour dashes are presented in deep blue. The double digits around the hour track also remain true to the typical typography of the N.03, with golden tones that catch the light beautifully. These features, along with the N.03 reference at the base of the dial and the crisp black needle-like central hands, are all protected underneath a strong piece of domed anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The back of the case is also sealed with the same material, showcasing the movement as it performs effortlessly.

The Sellita SW 200 is the automatic movement that beats inside this 50-meter water-resistant stainless steel case. It performs at a rate of 28, 800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 38 hours. The new Meistersinger N.03 watch for 2023 is finished on a cognac leather strap with a stainless steel buckle that is engraved with the famous German brand logo. The watch also comes complete inside a genuine presentation box with full paperwork and a two-year warranty.
