Hands-on with the Bremont Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph

The new Bremont Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph watch strengthens the brand’s ties between British watchmaking and its role as Official Timekeeper to the Williams Racing Team.

Since 2017, Bremont has been launching its new and exciting collections on home turf, underscoring an emphasis on British watchmaking more than ever. Retailers, press and exclusive clients have been attending Bremont’s launch events held in townhouses across London for the past four years, but now that the British brand has its own state-of-the-art Manufacturing and Technology Centre named The Wing, there will be no need for Bremont to showcases its latest releases anywhere other than its Henley-on-Thames facility. One watch collaboration to steal this year’s show was the Bremont Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph and the new Bremont Williams Racing Box Set.

Bremont’s partnership with Williams celebrates the best in British engineering. Since embarking on a new chapter together in 2021, Bremont launched The Wing and the Williams Racing Team sold its majority stake to Dorilton Capital. Both partners now look forward to another exciting year in the field of precision timekeeping and Formula 1 racing. Now, entering its second year of partnership with Williams, Bremont has released the Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph. An entire area of ‘The Wing’ named the ‘Williams Racing Pit Lane’ was dedicated to this new release during the brand’s annual watch showcase, enabling guests to play Williams-themed Scalextric and test their reaction time on the Batak wall. Guests were also granted their first view at the new chronograph watch. To top it off, the Williams Racing team will be putting the watch through its paces in the upcoming 2022 F1 season and the brand has revealed that The Wing will also become a base for creating car parts, facilitating a platform for shared expertise and engineering know-how.

The Bremont Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph

The F1 team’s Official Timing Partner proudly unveils the new Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph in its familiar three-part case construction crafted from stainless steel. The watch is a bit of a beast on the wrist, measuring a diameter of 43mm and has been CNC machined in-house at Bremont’s watchmaking atelier, featuring a middle section coated with scratch-resistant PVD and a TripTick case design that promises superior robustness. The watch is also 200-meter water-resistant and features heavily curved 22mm lugs. All of these elements come together to form a design that underpins Bremont’s commitment to creating watches that are “Tested Beyond Endurance”. The key features of the watch are is bidirectional tachymeter bezel and striking partially-filled panda chronograph dial.

Inside the case of the new Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph is the bulletproof Bremont BE-53AE movement, which derives from an original ETA movement. The engine features a Glucydur balance wheel, an Anachron balance spring, and a Nivaflex mainspring with a custom decorated rotor inspired by a Williams F1 Racing car rim that can be viewed through a sapphire-backed case. The movement performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a useful 42-hour power reserve.

Presenting the time in a colour palette that faithfully weaves in the shades of the William F1 Racing Team’s livery in hues of Oxford blue, electric blue and white - the dial of this new Bremont Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph features a black snailed 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour totaliser in the same finish, and a white small second sub-dial with an electric blue hand. The central chronograph seconds hand is represented in bright red, whilst the tachymeter scale on the bezel is finished in black ceramic. Super-LumiNova-filled applied indexes and hands ensure a rich glow at night. Overall, the design of the dial evokes some of the earlier 1970’s sports chronographs that tip their hat to the heyday of motorsport racing.

The new Bremont Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph secures comfortably to the wrist with a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp and the timepiece comes complete inside a genuine Bremont presentation box, along with an original wheel nut from a historic Williams F1 racing car.

Individually hand-assembled by master craftsmen at Bremont and made to special order, the two-piece box set boasts a special limited-to-45-pieces worldwide exclusivity and a once in a lifetime Williams Racing experience. The FW44 Chrono and the FW44 Classic timepieces make up this unique Bremont Williams Racing Box Set.

All other elements imitate the look, feel and performance of the Supermarine WR-22 Chronograph watch. The watch is accompanied by a more elegant-looking 40mm Bremont FW44 Classic, crafted from satin-finished stainless steel and a darker ‘Oxford Blue’ Pantone used on the dial that compliments the watch’s nubuck leather strap.
