Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II Watch Review

The captivating scene that unfolds and plays out across the surface of the display in this new Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II watch is a sheer sight to behold. A magnificent blend of diamonds, Paraiba tourmalines and lagoon-blue coated ruthenium crystals creates a spellbinding iteration of the moon phase complication as we know it, suggesting a wholly unique approach to timekeeping.

It was only last year when Arnold & Son surpassed the traditional two-dimensional moon phase watch display with the release of the bewitching Luna Magna timepiece. It showcased a three-dimensional version of the moon at the southern hemisphere of the dial and was considered the largest 3D moon phase to ever be fitted inside a watch. As a result, it became an instant success among Arnold & Son watch collectors. The moon phase dial measured a 12mm diameter and was crafted from a mix of aventurine and marble, glowing in rich tones as it rotated under the light. Now, the Luna Magna Ultimate II watch is proving to be just as alluring and is the latest creation to be released by the Swiss watch manufacturer. Conveying a three-dimensional moon, the unique textures and tones of its focal feature are a spectacle to admire in this lagoon-blue iteration.

If you weren’t already aware, a complete lunar cycle takes 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds, which makes this Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II watch all the more technically impressive since the brand’s expert team of craftsmen has done all it takes to recreate this cycle as accurately as possible. In simple terms, you will never have to correct the function of this moon phase watch… unless you’re planning to live another 122 years… and that really would be some accomplishment! The moon phase complication has long been a collector’s delight, displaying the surface of the moon lit up by the sun, exactly how it is seen in the night sky. The moon phase indicator recreates the exact shape of the moon, taking the wearer through its entire process from a new moon (where no sunlight shines on the moon) right through to a full moon and back again. Now, glowing with a neon turquoise light achieved by an entire surface coated with turquoise PVD-treated ruthenium crystals, this mesmerising timepiece demonstrates Arnold & Son’s unwavering determination to create a sense of exquisiteness and refinement in the design of this luxurious moon phase watch.

With just 8 of these exceptionally beautiful timepieces available in the world, this is an incredibly rare and special novelty to add to a collection. Its gem-encrusted globe is surrounded by a sea of these rare Paraiba tourmaline gemstones, of which only 1 is mined per 10,000 diamonds. These stones grant depth to the dial’s composition. Interestingly enough, this moon phase feature is depicted by two hemispherical elements that impersonate the moon and its shape as seen in the night sky each evening, yet if you flip the watch over, you also get a chance to admire the underside of the sphere, as well as a specially appointed movement guaranteed to deliver relentless precision.

The new Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II is housed inside a beautiful case crafted from 18ct white gold. The surface of the precious metal has received a flawless polish to enhance an indulgent feel against the wrist. The diameter of the watch’s case measures 44mm. Make no mistake, this is a broad timepiece, yet with its meticulous detail and relatively slim case, the proportions of the watch are tastefully balanced out to ensure that its size is not so imposing once mounted to the wrist. The case of this Arnold & Son limited edition moon phase watch is also integrated with 30-meter water resistance. On the front and back of the watch is a strong piece of anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. One to expose the attention to detail in the display of the wristwatch, the other to showcase the movement whilst in motion. Upon its bezel are 112 baguette-cut diamonds that effortlessly catch the light, adding a halo of brightness around the lagoon-blue hues of the dial itself.

Upon the display of the new Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II watch is an 18ct white gold moon phase set with 161 scintillating round brilliant-cut diamonds. These glistening stones are accompanied by a total of 161 Paraiba tourmaline gemstones. Above this captivating feature is an off-centre hour and minute scale crafted from iridescent white pearl. The crisp black Roman numerals representing the hour track contrast beautifully against the vivid blue tones of the hands themselves whilst the rest of the turquoise PVD-treated ruthenium crystal dial remains considerably spacious and simplified.

Inside the 18ct white gold case of this Arnold & Son Watch is the A&S1021 calibre. As this is a mechanical watch, you will need to manually wind this movement every 90 hours once the power reserve becomes low. The movement is endowed with 36 jewels and provides a 90-hour power reserve performing at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. To complete its alluring style, the Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II watch is fitted on a lagoon-blue alligator skin alligator strap to complement the shades of its gem-set dial. The strap secures around the wrist with a pin buckle crafted from 18ct white gold, with a further selection of glistening diamonds set into its surface.
