What does the Seiko Presage line offer?

The Seiko Presage is one of the Japanese brand’s most versatile ranges and makes use of the company’s full range of mechanical calibres. This range of 60-plus models are powered by everything from the more affordable 4R movement to the more superior Calibre 6R27. The latter movement powers the multi-hand power reserve watch, whilst several watches are powered by the latest 4R57 movement – the first ever to be fitted with a central power reserve indicator shown on its display.

The new Seiko Presage Green Urushi watch SPB295J1

The new Seiko Presage Green Urushi SPB295J1 limited edition watch boasts a beautiful lacquered dial that plays uniquely with the light. Created by the hands of lacquer artist, Isshu Tamura, the dial is a true work of art that makes timekeeping just that little bit more exciting. The artist was born in 1957 and trained in the traditional technique known as the Kaga Maki-e-gold lacquer of Kanazawa. This same technique has also been applied to pens, whilst the watch dials he has worked on have been highly acclaimed for their elaborate detail.

In the design of the recently released Seiko Presage Green Urushi watch, the deep green olive tones of the dial have been combined with rich gold powder details. These indulgent nuances create a resolutely luxurious and charming finish to the wrist, adding to the high-end feel that the Presage watch collection upholds. It is the first time that the Japanese watchmaker has combined this green colour and the Urushi design together. It also features the double retrograde feature which hasn’t been seen for a long time within the brand’s archives. In this unusual layout, the date window resides at 6 o’clock, whilst the days of the week can be followed at the 2:30 location.

How does the Seiko Presage Green Urushi Limited Edition watch reference SPB295J1 wear on the wrist?

Good question. The Seiko. Presage Green Urushi watch measures a compact diameter of 40.5mm and has been crafted from stainless steel. This is especially useful to know if you have a smaller-sized wrist since this Seiko watch will wear well with all wardrobes and won’t overpower the wrist. On top of the wrist is a domed piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with layers of anti-reflective technology. It not only protects the dial from unwanted damage but grants a glare-free view into the deep green tones of the dial. Here, you can reference the hours of the day via stick markers that are slender and refined. These are indicated by a set of central hour and minute hands that taper. The hour hand has a droplet shape at the end, whilst the second hand is needle-fine to promote a sense of elegance across the dial. Twisted lugs and a conical crown combine with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces across the case material to create sophisticated finishes. Upon the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback is the limited edition number of the watch and the serial number.

The dial of the Seiko Presage Green Urushi watch, however, is the most interesting aspect of the design. Made with an extract of Chinese lacquer tree (Urushi), the technique originates from Kanazawa in the mainland of Japan and is a century-old art. Having been painted and polished several times, the dial takes on a personality of its own, paying tribute to Kanazawa in the summertime with sunset-inspired golden elements that reflect the summers warm yellowing light, blanketing over a lush moss-covered forest. This technique is the best way to achieve dark colours as seen on the display of this Seiko Presage watch. Although time-consuming, the effects pay off and the layering on the dial is said to become stronger and stronger over the years, an advantage to any collector since it helps retain the deep and glossy colour of the dial for longer. The hour markers are also printed in white, enabling them to stand out in deep conditions.

Inside the Seiko Presage Green Urushi Limited Edition watch is the Calibre 6R24, which comprises a total of 32 jewels and provides a useful power reserve of 45 hours whilst performing at a rate of 28.800 vibrations per hour. Completing its look is a classic black buffalo leather strap, enclosing comfortably against the wrist with a stainless steel three-fold clasp stamped with the famous Seiko logo.
