A Look at the U-Boat Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve Watches for 2023

U-Boat goes even more retro with the new 40 and 45mm Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve watches, crafted from an IP bronze-coated stainless steel case and featuring unique oil-filled dials.
Over the last few years, Italian watchmaker U-Boat has been releasing luxury wristwatches that have given the brand an almost new identity. Sure, the brand is renowned for its oversized military-inspired models for the Italian Navy, as well as its field watches, but recently we have seen a heavy focus on watches like the Capsoil, the Capsoil Doppiotempo and the Darkmoon. These are examples of more wearable watches – those that might appeal to fans of simpler, robust and regular-looking timepieces. Despite these more contemporary watches, U-Boat still offers oversized watches for those that love the attention-demanding, vintage-inspired feel that comes with investing in this brand, but for the Watches & Wonders 2023 event in Geneva, the watchmaker has released a slew of new Darkmoon watches with vibrant dials and vintage/camouflage cases. The appealing feature of the Darkmoon watches is that they have been designed with an oil-filled dial and a deep, domed sapphire crystal glass top. Together, these two features combine to create a unique view of the time upon one of U-Boat’s most popular dial designs to date. The Capsoil concept makes the glass appear to disappear, since the oil fills up to the underside of the glass surface, leaving just one beautiful bubble that appears to float and dance across the display, changing its position each time you look at the watch. This floating bubble has an almost hypnotic effect. The mesmerising bubble enlarges sections of the dial, acting as a sort of magnifying glass. Whether you have been drawn to previous U-Boat Darkmoon watches before or not, the brand has to be commended on coming up with such a unique timekeeping concept. The larger 45mm U-boat Capsoil Titanio watch, for example. uses the same technique but appears to wear smaller on the wrist due to the way the case is cleverly shaped out of a lightweight titanium material.
An IP-treated case creating a bronze effect
Two of the new U-Boat Darkmoon watches for 2023 include the Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve and the Darkmoon Curve Camouflage. If you love the appeal of a bronze watch but don’t want to run the risk of its patinated case turning the skin on your wrist green, the new U-Boat Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve watch is a perfect option for you, since its case is actually crafted from stainless steel but features an IP bronze-treated case. Multiple layers of paint have been applied to the surface of the case, giving it the look of bronze material without any bronze being involved.
The new U-Boat Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve watch is offered in a brown dial with black elements or in reverse – a black dial with brown elements. Of course, the brown dial enriches the bronze colour of the case further to create an even more pronounced vintage aesthetic, whilst the black dial version is more pared-back and modest for accompanying with formal attire or a smart suit at night. The black dial version has received a shot of vivid red colour seen in the “Darkmoon Working Between 0-60 degrees” lettering. In the brown dial, these words, also in red, appear almost orange in colour. The dial of the Darkmoon watch features an hour track represented in a mix of dashes, circular dots and the typical Arabic numerals at 4 and 8 o’clock. If you prefer an alternative look, the model is also available in a black PVD-coated stainless steel case. These three 40mm models are also offered in a broader 44mm size and are all fitted with a quartz movement for unbeatable accuracy inside a 50-meter water-resistant housing.
The two new U-boat Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve watches and the black PVD-coated version are all fitted on a black rubber strap with bold U-boat lettering bossed into its surface. Above all, it is the made-in-Tuscony concept that attracts so many watch aficionados to this brand.
