A Look at the new IWC Portofino Automatic 34 Watches

IWC adds a blue dial and silver dial to its Portofino Automatic 34 line, complete with captivating diamond detailing that underscores a glamourous and indulgent edge to each timepiece.

When it comes to choosing your preferred IWC watch, it can be a little like choosing your favourite child. Difficult (but not impossible!). All the Schaffhausen-based watch manufacturer’s designs are on par with one another. All are beautifully developed, and expertly refined, and all signify an important part in the company’s heritage in creating some of the world’s most elegant luxury watches. Yet the Portofino watch is just that little bit different...

The IWC Portofino watch

The IWC Portofino watch collection was first launched in 1984 and soon became one of the most successful. The unisex range offers IWC watches for men and women alike and boasts models with an uncluttered dial and a style inspired by the origins of the classic pocket watch. If you haven’t already explored the Portofino watch family in detail, you certainly should do. You’d be hard-pressed to find a watch that didn’t convey utmost elegance and opulence. These timepieces look and feel special, which explains why they make for such a sentimental gift or milestone marker. The “Portofino” range takes its name from the picturesque fishing village in the heart of the Mediterranean and within this collection are chronograph options, as well as timeless three-handed models accompanied by a date feature. Whilst there’s no arguing that the Portofino watch looks simply stunning on one of the brand’s traditional brown leather bands, there is something incredibly elegant about those models available on a Milanese stainless steel bracelet. These models simply ooze sophistication and have become one of the Maison’s most recognisable designs to date.

New IWC Portofino Automatic 34 watches for 2022

The new 34mm Automatic IWC Schaffhausen watches from the Portofino collection underscore the same values of minimalist beauty and sophistication with their many faithful features, such as their Feuille hands, perfectly rounded cases and convex sapphire crystal glass fronts. The two 34mm models in question have been released alongside three new 34mm Portofino Automatic Day & Night models that capture the sun and moon on their displays at 6 o’clock, six 37mmm Portofino Automatic watches in a choice of different dial colours and case materials, three 37mm moon phase models and a Portofino Chronograph 39 watch. Available across two variables, however, these two new 34mm Portofino Automatic watches exude different personalities, proving that choosing between the two is a hard decision to make.

Whilst their 37mm counterparts feature sapphire crystal glass exhibition casebacks for observing the performance of the movement within, the 34mm models feature a closed caseback. Interesting to note here is that whilst diamonds on the bezel are optional, the diamond detailing on the dials of the new 34mm releases is mandatory. These can be seen positioned elegantly above each hour marker. A stunning blue dial can be explored in more detail here and features rhodium-plated hour markers and Feuille-shaped hands, together with distinctive Roman numeral indexes at 12 and 6 o’clock. This lady’s IWC Portofino watch will make a beautiful addition to formal or professional attire with its perfectly rounded stainless steel case integrated with 50-meter water resistance. The top of the case is fitted with a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front. Underneath this strong pane of glass are twelve bright round brilliant-cut diamonds that interact beautifully, both with the deep entrancing blue tones of the dial and the light which hits the surface of the display from all angles. The rounded bezel, which completes the timeless style of this Portofino watch perfectly, has rounded sides and a high polish to compliment the alternating brushed and polished links of a 5-link stainless steel bracelet. The metal band secures to the wrist with a folding clasp engraved with the IWC logo and the watch has also been integrated with the brand’s quick-change system for alternating it with a material strap.

The silver version of the new IWC Portofino Automatic 34 watch boasts shimmering tones underneath its sapphire glass front and features a bezel that has been meticulously encrusted with round brilliant-cut diamonds. These scintillating stones, together with the delicate diamonds positioned above the hour markers contribute to an overall more glamorous and indulgent style on the wrist. Just like its deep blue sibling, this watch is water resistant to 50 meters and fitted on a stainless steel bracelet. It’s also powered by the same movement – the Calibre 35100, with a power reserve of 42 hours and a performance capable of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement comprises 148 hand-assembled components including its 25 jewels, which are all concealed behind a closed steel caseback.
