A Look at the Louis Moinet Time To Race Silver Winner and Orange Papaya Watches

The highly domed sapphire crystal glass top extends beyond the case in the design of the new Louis Moinet Time To Race Chronographs. It reveals a unique view of the column wheel and lever arrangement of its movement. Introducing the new Orange Papaya and Silver Winner Time To Race Chronograph watches…

It’s quite mind-boggling to think that during the 1800s, horological masterpieces were already being created by experts like Louis Moinet. In 1816 he created what is considered one of the world’s first chronographs. Named the ‘Compteur de Tierces’, it could measure the passage of stars and performed at a staggering rate of 216,000 vibrations per hour. It could also measure events to 1/60th of a second. All this in one neat package put Louis Moinet ahead of the game in the chronograph world in what was a design that has now come to inspire today’s line of Time To Race Chronographs. Last year the brand released a trio of Time To Race Chronographs measuring a diameter of 40.7mm. They offered a clear view of the column wheels and levers of the movement through a clear and legible dial. Rosso Corsa, Racing Green and Bleu de France were the three colours made available in last year’s Time To Race watches. Now, Louis Moinet extends the line with a stunning titanium model fitted on straps in colours of zesty orange and sleek black.

Although certainly collector’s items, these watches are not produced by Louis Moinet in a limited edition, rather they are considered a collection of unique pieces. Louis Moinet also offers the opportunity to personalise each Time To Race watch with a number chosen by the wearer, which can be displayed on the front of the watch with its own colour code. Inspired by the iconic colours of the motorsport world, the new Louis Moinet Time To Race collection has now acquired the Silver Winner watch with a silver tint to its skeletonised dial design and a splash of red colour seen in the tachymeter scale around the periphery of the dial. The Orange Papaya watch released alongside it, however, features vivid orange accents in the same location on the tachymeter scale, whilst the rest of the scale is represented in a striking blue.

Watches embodying an aerodynamic design

Thanks to a domed sapphire crystal glass top, a sideway view is granted into the dial, offering a previously unknown sight into the mechanism of the movement. This glare-proof glass has an imposing curvature that embodies the aerodynamic quest undertaken by the brand to create this innovative Time To Race Chronograph. This exploration of aerodynamics has led to a new bezel, exclusive to the series. Both models have a bezel ring designed in the same way as the previous red, blue and green models that is dissociated from the glass, making it possible to reference two different short time measurements, a 60-second scale and a tachymeter scale. What makes these sporty and dynamic chronograph watches even more special is the unique technology carried out to achieve luminous measuring indices on the dial and flange in darkness. At night, these markers glow richly having been applied using pad printing to give them a flat, matte appearance. This artisanal approach to creating these finishes reflects the level of quality adhered to throughout the entire design.

Adding further contrast to the display, the flange sits atop a woven carbon fibre plate. Upon the display is a large hand that joins two sub-scale hands in a different colour - red for the Silver Winner model and orange for the Orange Papaya watch. The main hours and minutes are given to the sub-dial located at 6 o’clock, set against a white plate and adorned with a bold double or single-digit number of the wearer’s choice. Machined from grade 5 titanium, the cases of these two new Time To Race Chronograph watches promise robustness and a lightweight feel on the wrist, weighing a mere 18 grams. Subtly arched lugs lead to a bold yet durable black or orange rubber strap. Of course, the single pusher concept of the watch is made obvious at 2 o’clock where the polished push-piece can be seen attached to the side of the lightweight titanium case. What’s more, the movement inside the 50-meter water-resistant watch is capable of producing a power reserve of 48 hours and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
