A Look at the Baume & Mercier Riviera Quartz Diamond 10663 Watch

The most recent quartz-powered option from the Riviera watch collection by Baume & Mercier is the 10663 model, adorned with a total of 44 round brilliant-cut diamonds upon its striking dodecagonal-shaped bezel

Have you ever wondered what the next move will be within the steel sports watch stratosphere? Considerate it the Baume & Mercier Riviera watch. Because for some time, Baume & Mercier was leading the way with its 1973 original Riviera watch, designed in a similar way to some of the most iconic watches during this era albeit for a more affordable price. The thing is, when it comes to collecting steel sports watches, you can either be savvy and opt for an affordable manufacturer, backed by brand provenance and a solid heritage (a company that knows how to build a robust, reliable and accurate sports watch) or you can go on a life-long waiting list with a manufacturer, re-mortgage your house to pay for its and probably land yourself a divorce! As much as iconic sports watches by Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe are highly desirable - for the majority of the population, they’re also highly unrealistic. This brings us to more affordable options like the Baume & Mercier Riviera. The series comprises chronographs, steel-on-steel options, models with titanium bezels and quartz-powered watches, like the latest diamond-set ladies Baume & Mercier Riviera.

There are many affordable luxury steel sports watches out there on the market today, but the difference between a good choice and a poor choice all lies within the watchmaker you choose and its values. Baume & Mercier has over 180 years of expertise to call upon when it comes to making a rugged sports tool, and the Riviera watch collection, which recently saw a makeover, is no exception to this rule. Built-in the archetypal way, the wristwatches from this collection tick all the right boxes. They come in automatic format or quartz-powered format and are equipped with an interchangeable strap-changing system that enables a steel bracelet to be swapped for a rubber one with ease. They come integrated with a suitable water-resistant rating, a strong sapphire crystal glass front, and a legible dial. Within the Riviera watch collection, you can also choose between a range of dial colours, from feminine pink and luxurious mother-of-pearl dials, to smoky grey sapphire dials. There are also models powered by the brand’s Baumatic movement and a range of chronographs to choose from. We covered the latest Baumatic Riviera watch here and the non-Baumatic-powered versions here, but in this article, we’re going to look at a quartz-powered model from the series - the Baume & Mercier Riviera Quartz watch. The timepiece keeps the Riviera’s recognisable steel sports watch personality but adds a little extra special touch of glamour to the wrist, thanks to its scintillating round brilliant-cut diamonds meticulously set into the surface of its bezel.

Speaking of diamonds, Baume & Mercier has released another diamond-set watch from the Riviera watch collection earlier this year. The 33mm model is powered by a Swiss-made automatic movement and boasts a rich night blue dial colour with lustrous diamonds that spread from the display itself into the bezel and case. Tracing the shape of the diamonds replicates the French Riviera coastline as a nod to the origins of the collection. This diamond-set Riviera watch, however, is quartz-powered and comes in a gassiness steel framework that measures a total diameter of 36mm. Its broad bezel makes for a particularly eye-catching companion for the wrist, creating presence when paired with formal, smart or elegant evening attire. The watch embodies the same signature features of the Riviera, including a 12-sided bezel. This steel dodecagonal-shaped bezel is topped with four screws accompanied by 44 intricately set round brilliant-cut diamonds upon its surface. The top of the case is secured with a piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with a layer of anti-reflective material to assist with timekeeping during the day or night. In addition to this, the watch features 100-meter water resistance, making it an ideal companion for diving and swimming along the coast.

Underneath the piece of sapphire glass is a dial presented in silver. The surface of the display has been executed in a wave-like effect, adding depth to the design. Upon the dial’s surface is a set of central hour and minute hands together with an hour track treated with Super-LumiNova. Just two Roman numerals reside around the hour track of the new Riviera quartz watch. These are located at 12 and 6 o’clock on the dial. All these features join a date window at 3 o’clock.

As mentioned, the Swiss-made quartz movement that powers the hands of this Riviera watch around the dial is protected within a solid steel case with a screw-down caseback. The watch comes equipped with an integrated stainless steel bracelet that secures to the wrist with a security push-piece mechanism on a triple folding clasp.
