Chanel and Rado’s corner of the ceramic watch market is now being threatened by
a new innovation from Technomarine. Using new technology, the achingly trendy
brand has launched the first range of coloured ceramic bracelets and cases in
baby blue, baby pink, ocean blue, chocolate brown, red, white and black. A
mixture of two metal powders is heated to extreme temperatures (1,500°C), as
colour pigments are added. Then the blend is moulded under enormous pressure,
resulting in a radiant material that is virtually scratchproof. Until now, the
high-tech ceramic used in watchmaking was only available in white, black and
silver because of the difficulty in achieving perfect colour hues during the
heating process. Prices start at £1,075 for the plain bezel version. Pictured is the ocean-blue TechnoDiamond
Chrono Ceramique set with 125 full-cut diamonds.
