Introducing Squale Watches

We are incredibly excited to announce Squale as one of the latest brands to join the Jura Watches family! The history of dive watches would be incomplete without this small yet remarkable Swiss watch brand, who since 1950, have become renowned for their professional dive timepieces. After some time of industry silence, Squale watches are back and receiving a well-deserved bump in recognition especially for their collectible limited editions.

Squale, a name which in Italian translates to ‘shark’, is a brand instantly recognisable for its logo which features an outstretched shark with its namesake across the centre. In the beginning, the brand produced watches and watch cases for other Swiss brands who didn’t have the knowledge or experience to build their own professional diving instruments. This was a popular practice back in the 60’s and 70’s and some smaller brands even showcased the Squale logo on the dial as proof of their manufacture and as a sign of quality. One of the most iconic Squale designs remains the 50 Atmos case which showcases a distinctive crown at the 4 o’clock. This case was used by brands like Blancpain, DOXA and TAG Heuer.

In addition to their case building for other luxury watch manufacturers, Squale also created a range of dive watches under their own name. These extraordinary instruments were highly regarded by professional and amateur divers alike, particularly in the late 60’s. Jacques Mayol, a French freediving pioneer who was featured in Luc Besson’s film The Big Blue was known for being a huge fan of Squale watches and wore one while setting a depth record in 1970. Other divers such as Enzo Maiorca and Giuliana and Maria Treleani were also known for owning and praising Squale watches.

Over the past few years, the Squale name has been revived and remains a small family-run business based in Italy but with all production and assembly done in Switzerland allowing each Squale watch a Swiss made label. Their love of the sea and diving remains their focus as does the great Swiss tradition of precision watchmaking. Most of their collections also stay faithful to the company’s past designs which are often available to order with different colour combinations and strap choices.

One of our favourite collections is the Squale Matic watch inspired by the original Squalematic dive watches from the 1970's. These 600 metre dive instruments are perfect companions for underwater adventures with beautiful bakelite bezels, luminous dial accents and high precision Swiss made automatic movements. Another popular collection is the Squale 1521 watch, this time with 500 metre water resistant cases engineered from 316L stainless steel. Domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment provides optimal legibility underwater and on land while the stunning range of rubber, leather or metal straps provide a sophisticated finish.
