Hamilton Releases PSR MTX Limited Edition Watch

“I know what you're thinking, 'cause right now I'm thinking the same thing…” – the new Hamilton PSR MTX Matrix watch is not going to last long. Better secure yourself one of these 1,999 limited edition timepieces before it’s too late!

Capturing a green-tinted, futuristic vision of cyberspace, The Matrix film, first released in 1999, was a blockbuster that no film nerd would forget easily. Now the iconic sci-fi franchise has released its fourth instalment and is set to debut in cinemas on December 22, 2021. Visionary filmmaker, Lana Wachowski revives the ground-breaking franchise that redefined a genre. The new film reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in their iconic roles of Neo and Trinity, and to mark the occasion, Hamilton connects its roots once again with the film industry, releasing a new PSR watch – the Hamilton American Classic PSR MTX Digital watch.

The predecessor of the new Hamilton PSR MTX watch

The Hamilton PSR watch launched in 2020, a digital throwback to the Hamilton PTR (The Pulsar Time Computer). The 2020 digital watch paid homage to a milestone reached by Hamilton back in 1970. As a celebration of the Pulsar’s 50th anniversary, it was reintroduced in the form of an advanced, forward-thinking design, promising a faithful reproduction of the original but with some impressive modifications. Now, the Hamilton PSR Matrix Digital watch, limited to 1,999 pieces worldwide, is housed in a sleek all-black aesthetic that perfectly fits Wachowskis’ fourth instalment of the hit film, “The Matrix Resurrections”.

The Hamilton Pulsar was a revolutionary design when it appeared in the early 1970s. Despite being powered by quartz movement, it featured no ticking hands, no traditional analogue dial and no moving parts. The digital display would show the time lit up by a red LED once the wearer activated the pusher underneath his fingertips, lighting up the time at any point during the day or night.  If the wearer chose to hold the button down longer, the passing seconds would show. Innovative for its time, the Hamilton Pulsar watch was designed specifically to reserve power and was only able to light the time up once the screen was activated.

Modelled closely on the Hamilton Pulsar P2, the Hamilton PSR released just last year featured a rounded cushion-shaped case, as well as a protruding crystal glass front made from sapphire as opposed to mineralite. It offered retro Hamilton watch collectors an improved water resistance of 100 meters and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) with an Organic Light-Emitting Diode feature for presenting the time whenever required. This ensured a permanent display could be enjoyed whether during the night or day, but by pressing the activation button in this updated version, the time would be brought up in high-contrast by OLED numerals.

The new Hamilton PSR MTX Limited Edition watch

Now the Hamilton PSR watch launches again in the form of the PSR MTX Digital watch – a limited edition watch belonging to the American Classic collection and powered by a quartz movement once again. Although it is not believed to appear in the film itself, the new Hamilton Matrix watch certainly looks as though it has stepped right out of the sci-fi film. The watch has been designed in close partnership with Warner Bros and faithfully manages to translate the look and feel of the film into a compact, futuristic timekeeping companion that is sure to get noticed on the wrist. The darker and brooding feel of the watch features a squared-off, ovoid shape with integrated lugs that lead to a black PVD-coated steel link bracelet, securing to the wrist with a folding clasp.

Sitting at a 13.30mm height on the arm, the Hamilton PSR MTX limited edition watch will light up the dial temporarily with OLED numerals once the pusher is activated. This feature comes in handy, particular for outdoor use. Otherwise, however, the digital screen of this new Hamilton PSR watch displays the time clearly and efficiently for normal use through its LCD display.

The back of the case in this new Hamilton PSR MTX Matrix watch is where this digital watch really stands out from the rest, with a special engraving depicting the falling lines of code from “The Matrix”. The 100-meter water-resistant capability of the black PVD-coated stainless steel case offers ample protection over the quartz-powered movement sitting within. The raining digital code pattern across the caseback hides the limited edition number of the watch in its clever design.

Minimal in execution, Hamilton manages to achieve impact with a very bold and effective design that offers restricted functions and features. The time-only display creates an almost photo-negative effect, complete with cyberpunk, aggressive and ultra-masculine edges.
