How Did Black Friday Start?
Initially, a US idea, the UK Black Friday phenomenon started a few years ago. Traditionally held the day after the American holiday of Thanksgiving, the discount day would mark the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Some say the name originated from the concept that retailers would be in the black rather than the red after Black Friday sales whereas others believe it is the way police described the long traffic jams as people all gravitated towards the town centre in Philadelphia in the 90s. Whatever the reason, I guess the name stuck!
From around 2014, it became a huge event in the UK, slowly increasing in popularity and length of time. The pre-Christmas rush began with shoppers lining up outside of stores and websites crashing due to the high demand. Many shops open early and close late to give customers the opportunity to grab a bargain from the special offers. Of course, websites can start their deals from midnight on the Thursday before and are open 24 hours a day.
