History of Ball Watches – on the Ball!

Did you know that the term “Get on the Ball” comes from the Ball watches company?

In 1891 a head on collision between two trains at a depot in Ohio. Eight people lost their lives and the depot was severely damaged. The crash happened when a high speed mail train collided head-on with a passenger train going in the opposite direction.

The passenger was expected to stop and let the mail train pass on by. However the conductor had not noticed that his watched had stopped for 4 mins and restarted. This resulted in the passenger train being late in arriving at the stopping point.

As a result the railway company enlisted the Webb C Ball a well know jeweller to research time and the state of watch conditions throughout the railway.

Ball instituted the current timekeeping program that specifies the watches that trainmen can use.

His extreme attention to detail and accuracy coined the saying “Get on the Ball”
