Introducing the new TAG Heuer Carrera O2T Tourbillon Limited Edition
Monday - 26 April 2021
This is not just any TAG Heuer Carrera watch. It’s a 2021 limited edition to 250 pieces worldwide tourbillon. A titanium and ceramic model powered by an in-house movement – the 45mm TAG Heuer Carrera O2T Tourbillon Limited Edition watch.
The new TAG Heuer Carrera 02T Tourbillon watch is a unique horological recipe – one part Carrera Tourbillon – one part Carrera Sport – mix them both together and add a shot of blue – what do you get? A TAG Heuer Carrera watch with a completely new dial. One that even moves away from the skeleton dials that hark back to the Jean-Claude Biver era. Die-hard TAG Heuer watch fans have long anticipated the day when the Swiss watchmaker finds a way to put the tourbillon version of the Carrera on a conventional dial. Now that day has arrived. And wait – there’s another first. The new limited edition TAG Heuer Carrera O2T Tourbillon watch is fitted on the classic H-shaped bracelet, but this time forged from lightweight titanium.
TAG Heuer has well and truly made a name for itself in creating affordable and accessibly luxury watches, but that doesn’t mean it can’t put its hand to developing one of the industry’s highest complications. In the past, the watchmaker has succeeded in creating a ceramic version of the tourbillon and the 02T Nanograph (equipped with a carbon hairspring), not to mention iterations crafted from rose gold. The very first TAG Heuer 02T Tourbillon watch was created back in 2016, but this new model boasts a conventional almost-solid dial for the first time. This kind of dial in a sports watch is refreshing and without needing to go overboard, it gives TAG Heuer the perfect opportunity to show the value in such a complex beating heart.
The TAG Heuer Calibre 02T automatic movement that lies at the centre of the new TAG Heuer Carrera 02T Tourbillon watch - peaking out through a 6 o’clock open heart feature at 6 o’clock - is a descendant of the Calibre 05, which has served the company’s catalogue loyally over the years. The Calibre Heuer 02 movement has featured in everything from the Autavia Heuer 02 watches to the iconic square-shaped Monaco watch to the skeletonised Carrera models. The Carrera in which it has powered since 1969 is classified as the archetypal luxury sports watch – a timepiece born for the racetrack. The Carrera’s design originally paid homage to the dangerous Carrera Panamericana auto race but has supplied accurate time to many professional divers over the past six decades, keeping its handsome good looks and sporty aesthetic. The Calibre Heuer 02T movement, however, powers the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T 45mm Chronograph watches specifically. The vertical clutch column-wheel chronograph produces an impressive 80-hour power reserve and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It contains 33 jewels and is COSC-certified. In terms of complexity, accuracy and quality, the TAG Heuer Carrera 02T Tourbillon Limited Edition watch is on another echelon. The tourbillon, originally developed by Breguet, cancels out the forces of gravity. The tourbillon counteracts the “drag” effect of the movement whilst holding the escapement and balance wheel inside a rotating cage that turns once a minute.
The new TAG Heuer Carrera 02T Tourbillon watch
Peaking through the sun burst rich blue dial of the watch, the tourbillon of the Heuer 02T movement can be seen, and it is the combination of both the dial’s colour and this visible slice of horology that becomes the Carrera’s USP in this model. The blue dial, with Super-LumiNova coated central hands that have been carved into a sword shape, is surrounded by a ceramic bezel in a matching blue colour. The white numerals on the surface of the fixed ceramic bezel depict the markings of the tachymeter scale. Ideal for measuring speed based on travel time or distance based on speed, the bezel is a prominent part of the watch, accelerating its sporty undertones once wrapped around the wrist. The baton-shaped hour markers around the hour track have also been treated with Super-LumiNova material, matching the same finish seen on the two sub-counters laid out in a bicompax format.
The polished chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock on the case of the new TAG Heuer Carrera 02T Tourbillon watch promises easy handling over the 30-minute and 12-hour counters placed respectively at 3 and 9 o’clock on the dial. These titanium pushers boast matching blue accents, as does the crown, and attach to the rest of the lightweight and remarkably strong fine-brushed titanium case. The new TAG Heuer Tourbillon is also integrated with 100-meter water resistance. The top of the case is equipped with a strong pane of anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass and the watch is completed on a fine-brushed H-shaped titanium bracelet with a TAG Heuer logo-engraved folding clasp.
