Alpina Watches Ambassadors Complete Crossing of the Stikine Ice-field Unsupported
Wednesday - 12 August 2015
Alpina Watches ambassadors Borge Ousland and Vicent Colliard successfully completed the dangerous crossing of the Stikine ice-field unsupported.
The experienced polar explorers braved the challenging expedition that proved unpredictable and extreme. With the changing climate that left the duo vulnerable to danger, in unexpected situations and in life threatening circumstances. Their expert decisions to change routes and skilful assessments of the challenge facing them allowed for the adventurers to complete the tough challenge. Borge Outland is recognised as a polar exploration legend and Vicent Colliard is eager, young and skilled making the partnership work harmoniously. The Stikine ice-field is Alaska’s southernmost ice field and reportedly one of Alaska’s most difficult and dangerous glaciers forcing the duo to ski and walk 170 KM in 16 days in extremely challenging and harsh conditions. Avoiding grizzly bears and melting snow is the all part of the day job for the extraordinary pair! The expedition marks the second glacier crossing of the 20 they endeavour to cross over the next 10 years in collaboration with the Aplina & Ice Legacy Project. The scheme plans to raise awareness and collect scientific data for the preservation of the world glaciers and the ancestral ice.
Accompanying the courageous polar explorers on their spectacular expedition was of course the Alpina Horological Smartwatch to monitor their activity, sleep patterns and goals for each day. Surviving the harsh conditions and changing climate the Alpina masterpiece became an extremely useful tool for the duo. Measuring their activity and sleep is vital data for the adventurers who are pushing their body to extreme levels to complete the challenge. A third member of the team with a vital part to play on the incredible, breathtaking and intimidating journey.
