A Blockbuster GMT

The Breitling Chronomat is well documented as having a cult status. Housing chronometer-certified movements and offering GMT functions for those who travel regularly, these watches are great all-round daily beaters with a sporty edge that always looks cool. The Chronomat by Breitling was first introduced in 1941 and was originally outfitted with a slide rule bezel. Yes – that’s right – the slide rule bezel that is now associated with the iconic Navitimer. But the Chronomat as we now know it was released in 1984. Its consistent design includes an onion-shaped crown and rider tabs at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock to make the bezel easy to manipulate under pilot’s gloves. As mentioned, the Chronomat watch collection has evolved and expanded over time. It now accommodates chronographs, rose gold and two-tone designs, size variances of 32mm to 47mm and, of course, a GMT, which brings us to the GMT 40…

The Breitling Chronomat GMT 40 has the same characteristics as the 1984 Chronomat watch but has some modern features to appreciate. It’s a versatile watch for every kind of pursuit, regardless of whether you travel or not. Its hardware is durable and long lasting, plus it comes with an additional hand to track another time zone. Its practical size measuring 40mm is another key feature that appeals to many watch enthusiasts. Across the top of each dial is a robust sapphire crystal glass front that protects the display from all manner of damage.

Breitling’s Tribute to Travel

The automatic Breitling Chronomat GMT 40 Ice Blue is the watchmaker’s tribute to travel. Its compact case crafted from stainless steel and platinum is tough and sturdy for wearing every day. The watch is integrated with 200-meter water resistance, making it a suitable companion for a dip in the water whilst travelling. If you’re a beach-goer, the cool summer-inspired ice blue dial colour is perfect for the warmer months. It comes with slim baton hour markers and a set of central hour and minute hands that have been treated with Super-LumiNova. The tip of the central second's hand has also been treated with the same luminescent material, as has the blue triangular tip of the GMT hand.

The Breitling Chronomat GMT 40 Ice Blue, released last year, offers easy-going aesthetics. The tone-on-tone 24-hour scale around the flange is another feature I like, mainly because it opens the dial up – an optical illusion that makes the display appear even more spacious than it naturally is. That same 24-hour scale is what enables you to track a second time zone. The dial also benefits from a date window at 6 o’clock, dressed against a white date wheel for extra legibility.

In addition to all these features, this GMT watch from Breitling’s Chronomat collection has an onion-shaped crown that is fluted and dome-shaped for an easy grip under the fingertips. This all-purpose sports watch is perfect for land, sea or air – as are all the timepieces from this same collection. It’s suitable for walking, hiking, mountain climbing, water sports and sessions at the gym, thanks to its practical black rubber strap. The band secures to the wrist with a Breitling-engraved stainless-steel folding buckle.
