The Breitling Chronomat is well documented as having a cult status. The Chronomat by Breitling was first introduced in 1941 and was originally outfitted with a slide rule bezel. Yes – that’s right – the slide rule bezel that is now associated with the iconic Navitimer. But the Chronomat as we now know it was released in 1984. Its consistent design includes an onion-shaped crown and rider tabs at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock to make the bezel easy to manipulate under pilot’s gloves. The tone-on-tone 24-hour scale around the flange is another feature I like, mainly because it opens the dial up – an optical illusion that makes the display appear even more spacious than it naturally is. That same 24-hour scale is what enables you to track a second time zone. The dial also benefits from a date window at 6 o’clock, dressed against a white date wheel for extra legibility.

In addition to all these features, this GMT watch from Breitling’s Chronomat collection has an onion-shaped crown that is fluted and dome-shaped for an easy grip under the fingertips.
