Oris reveals the new Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch of just 2000 pieces in support of its involvement with the Billion Oyster Project.
Who would have thought that Oysters play such a crucial role in maintaining the ocean’s ecosystem? According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – they do! That’s why successful Swiss watchmaker, Oris has teamed with ambitious non-profit organisation, Billion Oyster Project. The organisation was founded by Murray Fisher and Pete Malinowski, who aim to restore optimal levels of oysters by restoring one billion oysters to the sea by the year 2035. That’s some determination. A little like Oris, who has been on this path to raise awareness of ocean conservation for quite some time now. Just check out its current Oris Aquis Upcycle watch, which I covered in a little more detail here, for example.
The new Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch marks another chapter in this story. Using the trusty design of the Oris Aquis watch for its design, this new limited edition model is exclusive to just 2000 pieces worldwide and continues the brand’s “Change for the Better” campaign, which has seen Oris promote awareness of dolphin conservation and whale conservation, as well as backing several clean-up projects for rivers, lakes and coral reefs. The new Oris Aquis New York Harbour watch champions a stunning green mother of pearl dial to evoke the colours of the New York Harbour’s waters.
According to New York’s Department of Environmental Projection, New York Harbour has never been cleaner. In 110 years, this is the healthiest it has ever looked, attracting bunker fish and humpback whales. But there is still more work to be done. Oysters, which act as the water’s natural cleaning system, can filter many litres of water a day and remain a vital element of the harbour’s ecosystem. Numbers right now, however, are incredibly low as a result of untreated sewage and the dumping of industrial waste, resulting in a depletion of oyster numbers over recent years. To restore these numbers, Murray Fisher and Pete Malinowski are involving young school children and working closely with volunteers to collect reclaimed oyster shells, rinse them, expose them to natural elements for a year, and then place them in tanks within the New York Harbour. Free-swimming oyster larvae are then released into these tanks and take up habitat within these shells, settling and growing.
The new Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch
2000 of the new Oris Aquis New York Harbour watches will be released in collaboration with this important conservation project. The dial of the watch captures the changing tones of the water and provides the devoted Oris watch collector with an unusually coloured timepiece to add to his collection. The ever-changing opalescent tones of the green mother of pearl dial catch the light beautifully, releasing shimmering tones and enhancing the crisp markers that make up the model’s hour track around the edge of the dial. Additionally, the central hour and minute hands have been treated with Super-LumiNova material, as have the hour markers, whilst the second hand has a lollipop tip.
The new Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch measures a 41.5mm diameter and has been crafted from stainless steel. The crown guards are angular and the grooves along the bezel are well-defined for an easy grip under wet fingertips. An integrated stainless steel bracelet is not only comfortable but will suffice as a companion for wearing alongside smart or professional attire during the week. Alternatively, the new Oris Aquis limited edition watch is also available on a green rubber strap that beautifully matches the tones of its green mother of pearl dial, providing a sporty edge to combine with more casual attire. This new Oris Aquis watch for 2022 is integrated with 300-meter water resistance and features a bezel that is unidirectionally rotating. This special feature enables intuitive timekeeping underwater, thanks to a 60-minute dive scale engraved into the surface of the steel bezel surface in relief. The bezel only moves in the counter-clockwise direction, eradicating the risk of accidentally extending the time whilst diving.
On the top of the new Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch is a domed anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front, which protects the surface of the dial from coral reef scratches, bumps and nicks. Flipping the case of the watch over reveals a realistic engraving of three oysters, alongside the lettering ‘New York Harbour Limited Edition’ and, of course, the special limited edition number of the watch out of the allocated 2000 pieces. The lettering and engraved picture are set against a matte sandblasted background.
Additionally, the new Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch also features a date window at 6 o’clock on the dial, balanced cleverly by the Oris lettering in silvery hues at 12 o’clock. Inside the new limited edition Oris Aquis watch is the Calibre 400, which was released back in 2020. The relatively new automatic movement is based on the Sellita SW 200-1, which beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement is also fitted with Oris’ signature red rotor.
