U-Boat Dark Moon Watch Collection Review

Luxury Italian watch manufacturer U-Boat expands its stimulating Dark Moon series with a new selection of colourful dials inclusive of their unique “Oil Immersion” technology which sees the movement completely submerged in oil. From red to black, blue to green, brown to rainbow iridescence, the new U-Boat Dark Moon collection is as unique as ever.

When it was first launched in 2017, the U-Boat Capsoil collection proved once and for all that there was still so many boundaries of traditional watchmaking yet to be broken. Its unique concept centred entirely around its dial which encapsulates a low viscosity lubricating oil that moves and distorts the numerals and hands with every movement of the wrist. Shortly after the release of the first U-Boat Capsoil, the Dark Moon collection was launched, taking the same oily dial aesthetic but with a more minimalistic approach. Now, that U-Boat Dark Moon receives a spritely new makeover with the liquid dials transformed in a brand new range of colours.

In the words of U-Boat, the new U-Boat Dark Moon collection is designed to lift our emotions, stimulate our daily lives and encourage us through the use of our favourite colours and tones. And when we say there are several variations to choose from, we aren’t joking. The new line boasts 14 new models in total, 12 measuring to 44mm in diameter and two in 38mm. Each dial colourway, whether it’s the red, green, brown, blue, black, red with black or iridescent dial, is then available in a choice of a stainless steel case or a black DLC case.

As expected, each of these colourful dial designs incorporate the brand’s legendary "Oil Immersion” technology which was tested for the first time in the Capsoil collection but now finds itself centre stage in the new U-Boat Dark Moon line. A layer of thick oil completely immerses the Swiss Ronda quartz movement beneath and surrounds the dial in a full, deep colour. A compensation bubble can also be found on every dial, flowing freely around its boundary delivering a stunning visual display and also protecting the watch from changes in the external temperature.

Oil immersion like this would not be possible in a watch with an automatic winding movement, so as expected, the U-Boat Dark Moon watch collection utilises a quartz calibre. Both the 38mm and 42mm designs are powered by the Ronda 712.3 quartz movement which ensures a high precision of timekeeping and central hands for hours and minutes treated with a beige Superluminova.

The U-Boat Dark Moon watches measuring to 42mm are available in stainless steel or black DLC coated cases with a choice of red, green, brown, blue, black, red with black dials while the 38mm design is saved exclusively for the rainbow iridescent dial – also available in a choice of steel or black DLC. Those dressed in clean stainless steel have a stunning brushed finishing while the black DLC coated cases are matte in finish. All come equipped with domed sapphire crystal glass, screw down crowns situated on the left side of the case and a screw down case back specially equipped with an additional compartment for a quick battery change.

Again, standing out from the rest in its design, the iridescent-dialled 38mm U-Boat Dark Moon is the only variant out of the 14 available on a metal mesh bracelet while all others come paired with an ultra-resistant vulcanised rubber strap. Both the steel strap and the rubber straps are equipped with classic folding buckles engraved with the U-Boat emblem.
