Tuesday - 20 April 2021
Maurice Lacroix evolves the sporty Aikon Chronograph watch with a new quartz special edition timepiece to celebrate its role as Official timekeeper for Mahindra Racing. Here is the new Aikon Chronograph Quartz Special Edition Mahindra Racing watch.
A sporty new Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch joins the collection in a lightweight titanium case – the Aikon Chronograph Quartz Special Edition Mahindra Racing watch. Dressed in the colours of Mahindra Racing’s livery, the special edition Aikon Chronograph is geared towards the wrists of those on the racing track and those stood at the side. The watch is powered by a quartz movement, features a specially decorated case and boasts a distinct embossed dial surface.
Banbury-based motor racing team, Mahindra Racing originally started as a Grand Prix motorcycle racing competitor before refocusing on becoming a bike and engine supplier before pulling out of the sport completely in 2014. From then onwards it has competed in the FIA Formula E Championship, taking part in every season since it joined. The company is headquartered in India and has staff based in over 100 countries. Belonging to the USD 19.4 billion federation, Mahindra & Mahindra, it has taken four victories and 18 podiums – achievements that it equates to its pursuit of mechanical excellence.
Tying in with its passion for precision and superb mechanical engineering, Maurice Lacroix exemplifies its perfect fit as the role of Official Timekeeper for Mahindra. With a deep understanding of the skills required to maximise performance, the relationship between Maurice Lacroix and the motor racing team has never been more apparent. In addition to the 14 races and 12 cities that comprise the ABB FIA Formula E Championships, the electric-only racing series is also committed to raising awareness of global climate change and embraces the concept of sustainability – all of which Maurice Lacroix supports too. It endeavours to promote improved air quality by accelerating EV adoption across the globe. Mahindra racing was the first Formula E team to join the FIA’s Sustainability programme, becoming the second motorsport team in the world to achieve the highest level of accreditation in doing so. The managing director of Maurice Lacroix explains a little more about the close connection between the watchmaker and the racing team:
“It is important to us that we work with companies that share our passions and values. As you can see, Maurice Lacroix and Mahindra Racing are closely aligned. We both share a passion for success and a concern for the planet. We are both dynamic companies with much in-house expertise. We also choose to spend much time in the cities around the globe, engaging with our customers and responding to their desires. I look forward to both companies working together, embarking on this exciting adventure and sharing much success.”
The Aikon Chronograph Quartz Special Edition Mahindra Racing watch
On the racetrack, a thousandth of a second can be critical in taking the lead and securing a victory, so a legible dial is paramount. Luckily, Maurice Lacroix has been specialising in precision and legibility since 1975. The new Aikon Chronograph Quartz Special Edition Mahindra Racing watch exemplifies the sheer determination shared by both companies in producing quality, robust products. Its design is primed and ready for the racetrack with a dial dressed in the colours of the company’s livery. The Aikon watch collection was first introduced in 2016, powered by a quartz movement. Despite offering the model in an automatic version a couple of years later, the Aikon still holds a seat for the reliable quartz movement - this version being crafted from a titanium case. The watch is 100-meter water-resistant and measures a broad 44mm diameter. Its bold and masculine case shape is counterbalanced by its lightweight construction. The case is brushed but features a polished ring around the edge of the bezel – a feature that is also characterised by its six polished arms. Integrated lugs give the new special edition Aikon watch its distinctive tonneau-shaped case and the watch is topped with a sapphire crystal glass pane treated with anti-reflective properties. The back of the watch is decorated with red and black Mahindra Racing lettering alongside an image of an FIA Formula E Championship car in green and orange.
The dial of the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph Quartz Special Edition Mahindra Racing is white and adorned with the company’s high-end square-patterned finish, donating a sense of depth and detail to the display. Maurice Lacroix places the chronograph dials at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock offering 1/10th second, small seconds (incorporating a circular date aperture in white) and 30-minute functions respectively. In true Maurice Lacroix style, the blue-filled chronograph counters at 12 and 6 o’clock are larger than the 30-minute sub-dial. The red-coloured 30-minute counter matches the hue seen on the central chronograph seconds hand. The central hour and minute hands have been treated with Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping in the dark and the dial also features a rhodium-coated M logo above the Maurice Lacroix lettering at 3 o’clock.
Powering away at the centre of the new Aikon Chronograph Quartz Special Edition Mahindra Racing watch is a quartz movement in charge of hours, minutes, small seconds, date and chronograph functions. The watch is also fitted on a sporty grey rubber strap finished with a white centre and a red trim. The M logo is positioned on the strap below the south lugs and the band secures with a matching lightweight titanium pin buckle.
