Reviewing the Meistersinger Neo Plus Black and Azure Blue Watch

Inspired by the colours of an all-American classic diner, the 1950s style of the Meistersinger Neo Plus has received a splash of azure blue colour and evokes images of neon lights, milkshakes and duke boxes.

When you look at the commendable design of the Meistersinger Neo – you could mistake it for a watch that has been around for decades. The design is so simplistic, yet so minimalist and modern – it uses the brand’s clever concept of telling the time with one hand and features a circular date window that reflects the perfectly rounded shape of its polished bezel. The Neo watch has been around since 2015 and is the work of the Munster-based watch manufacturer’s founder, Manford Brassier. The only complaint with the Neo was its small size. Those with broader wrists just couldn’t take well to it. So, Meistersinger, being the tentative brand that it is, listened to its audience and came up with a big sister named the Neo Plus. The Neo Plus measured a much more appealing 40mn diameter for larger-wristed fans and came in an array of colours including black, midnight blue, opaline, sunburst green and ivory. The green and black models were equipped with a red single hour hand that popped against the richness of their displays and made for a stark contrast against the neutral tones normally selected by masters at Meistersinger. Since then, the collection has evolved to house similar designs to this larger 40mm Neo Plus model. One of the latest to enter the family is a release that coincides with the annual Geneva watch showcase, Watches & Wonders 2023.

A palpable black and azure blue dial

The new Meistersinger Neo Plus watch introduces stunning azure blue shades that can be seen in accents across its rich black dial. In addition to this new model, the Neo Plus has been released alongside a standard 36mm Neo watch that features a full azure blue dial. The pair’s mesmerising turquoise tones are a breath of fresh air to the collection and are enhanced by the brand’s trademark timing track. In the new Neo Plus watch, a white minute scale is used, with every tenth minute represented by a piercing azure blue dash.

The new Meistersinger Neo Plus NE492T watch, as mentioned, measures a 40mm diameter and is crafted from a two-piece stainless steel structure with a 30-meter water resistance. The top of the case is sealed with a domed hardened acrylic front that affords a clear view into the dial and its unique single-handed set-up. This handset is characteristic of the Meistersinger way, stripping timekeeping elements back to the essentials and enabling you as the wearer to focus on the time in a more casual and relaxed manner. At first, the concept of forgoing the main minute hand may seem daunting, yet surprisingly, it takes little if no time at all to get used to. This process, after all, follows an ancient  timekeeping format used before wristwatches were even a thing. Even the Neo Pointer Date models honour a historical way go tracking the days of the week with a smaller hand situated in the very centre of the dial, leaving the main hour hand to take up its role of telling basic time.

The new Meistersinger Neo Plus watch features a circular date window at 6 o’clock, a strong and single white hand for the main time, and the “Neo” lettering at 6 o’clock. The hand is guided by the Sellita SW-200 movement, which performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound. The watch is worn on a leather suede strap with discreet stitching and a polished stainless steel pin buckle for ease of wear.
