Oris Unveils the Unexpected Pro Pilot X Miss Piggy Watch

Loud and pink, the new Oris Pro Pilot X watch nods to the larger-than-life Miss Piggy character in the sequel to the brand’s homage to “The Muppets”

If someone had told us, a few years ago, that Oris would adopt a more playful approach to watchmaking and use one of its most disciplined-looking pilot’s watches to pay homage to a felt puppet from the kid’s mockumentary sitcom, “The Muppets”, we may have thrown the odd swear word into the phrase “Pigs might fly!”. Funnily enough, the new Pro Pilot X Miss Piggy is positively flying off the shelves as the brand releases its sequel to the former Kermit iteration.

Two of the biggest curve balls of the last decade in watchmaking they may be. Still, Oris is doing some extraordinary things to the Pro Pilot X series right now, and it’s giving fans the flutters, even though this new model is so far detached from what we know the Pro Pilot X to be. Or is it? Something like this felt like a near-on possibility until we had the chance to see it in the flesh, and now that we have, we can vouch for its beauty. “…pumped full of the girliest pink colour…”

The Oris Pro Pilot X has sharp looks. So,  throwing a hot pink dial into its mix of clean lines and chiselled tool-focussed aesthetics could have risked softening this respectable aviation watch too much. Yet, the combination just works, and no one seems to be able to put their finger on why. Another testament to the genius of Oris’ watchmaking prowess, of course. It’s this unique balance between disciplined and playful that has everyone talking. Fans are going wild for this non-limited pilot’s watch and despite the fact that it’s pumped full of the girliest pink colour, it loses none of its character.

Provoking a rush of compliments from the watch team here at C W Sellors, this is a new compact 34mm diameter and is aimed, of course, at the brand’s female audience. Like the Pro Pilot X Kermit watch from a couple of years ago - which boasted the character’s mug in the 6 o’clock date window on the first day of every month - the Miss Piggy version pays a reference to the famous character, this time on the back of the case.

Flip this rugged stainless steel lady’s watch over and you can catch a glimpse of Miss Piggy’s smiling face against a unique shade of lilac that’s akin to the character’s purple gloves she wears in the globally-loved TV show. The rest of the case, however, remains largely similar to the faithful Pro Pilot X watch, with a sapphire crystal glass front that protects the serine pink shades of the dial. The case is also water-resistant to 100 meters and features the jet-engine-turbine-inspired bezel, adding a prominent industrial-like frame around the singular diamond hour marker at 12 o’clock, shaped into a timeless baguette cut.

The remainder of the dial is equally as unusual. Take, for example, the way that the Oris and Pro Pilot lettering has been ghosted out to give the dial a neater and more cohesive look. And what about the baton hour markers? They melt into the dial in a purple colour to mute them tastefully. Interestingly, there is no luminous material on these markers, either, but the central hour and minute hands have received a generous treatment of Super-LumiNova, enabling them to glow during the night and in dark conditions. The loud colours of the hot pink dial mimic the softness of the puppet’s felt-like material, whilst the date window has been completely removed. The new Oris Pro Pilot X Miss Piggy watch will become part of the brand’s current collection, so female fans can breathe a sigh of relief that they will definitely get the chance to enjoy this special 34mm model on the wrist.

Another difference between the Kermit edition of the Pro Pilot X and this new Miss Piggy one is the change of movement. The movement powering this watch is the Sellita SW100 - a tried and tested movement that is respected for its reliability and accuracy. The movement is a simple time-only engine and beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour, delivering a power reserve of 42 hours once fully wound. The Oris 531 movement, as it’s called, is a stop-seconds mechanism, enabling you to temporarily stop the seconds hand upon pulling out the crown. Doing so allows you to synchronise with another timing to the very second.

Other features of the new Oris Pro Pilot X Miss Piggy watch include an integrated stainless steel bracelet, evoking a classic sportiness. The architecture of the links is enhanced by polished external links and brushed internal links. The lift-to-open clasp is another nod to aviation and one that you’ll likely be familiar with if you like the Pro Pilot watch collection in general. Its design is inspired by an aircraft seat buckle and is engraved with the Oris logo to engrain a sense of authenticity and brand provenance into even the smaller details.

Whether or not you think Oris is conforming to the “shrinking and pinking” trend that many brands revert to when catering to their female audience, there is no denying that Oris’ execution in doing so is nothing short of exceptional. The small details are the most noteworthy ones, and it’s incredible to see that the Swiss brand has managed to retain all the important features of this lovable pilot’s watch without losing an ounce of character or respect.
