Oris Releases Wings of Hope Limited Edition Watches

Based on the design of the trusty Big Crown pilot’s watch, the new Oris Wings Of Hope Limited Edition watches come in a 40mm steel version limited to just 1000 pieces and a smaller 38mm 18ct yellow gold iteration exclusive to 100 pieces. Both are fitted with Cervo Volante sustainable deer leather straps and are powered by one of Oris’ in-house high-performance five-day automatic calibres.

Oris’ Change for the Better campaign is not limited to ocean conversation and beach-cleaning efforts alone. Whilst some missions have taken the brand underwater, others into the sky, this new collaboration sees the Swiss watchmaker partner up with a US-based aeronautical humanitarian organisation that has been running for over 60 years. The new Oris Wings Of Hope Limited Edition watch will support vulnerable communities in over 50 different countries by collaborating with the organisation that relies heavily on donors and volunteers to bring medical support to those in need of it most.

The Wings of Hope organisation drums up over 350 volunteers each year to carry out its important mission, reaching more than 65,000 underprivileged people. Its origins span back to the late 1950s when the effects of Kenya’s drought were properly realised. New aeronautical support was called for in order to overcome the country’s poor transport links. Now, after six decades, the organisation operates all over the world and is funded by the help of private and corporate foundations. Oris’ commitment to creating change for the better has never been more aligned with organisations like Wings Of Hope, making this new partnership an integral one to add to the watchmaker’s already impressive portfolio of watches made in aid of similar causes.

The new Oris Wings Of Hope Limited Edition watch

Earlier this year, we covered the Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante watches, fitted on sustainable deer leather straps developed by Cervo Volante (you can check that article out here). In that same vein, Oris continues with its commitment to sustaining the manufacture and production of these low-impact methods by fitting the new Oris Wings of Hope Limited Edition watches with the same leather bands. These beautiful leather straps tell a story by way of including the imperfections that have occurred during the life of each deer – a process that many manufacturers would instantly discard. This unique and respectful approach reduces waste. Each strap is manufactured in one of the last two remaining tanneries in the whole of Switzerland, practising 100 per cent vegetable tanning processes within its facility.

The standard version of these two limited edition Oris Big Crown Wings Of Hope watches is the steel variation, limited to 1000 pieces worldwide and measuring a compact and comfortable 40mm diameter. Recently Oris revamped the design of the Big Crown and we’ve seen examples of this in the Big Crown in blue and the Holstein Limited Edition watch released in 2021. The elegant design is characterised by the removal of the coin edge bezel and an upgraded version of the numerals and hands on the dial.

Debuting in a fresh white dial, the new Oris Wings Of Hope Limited Edition is yet another first. Its stepped-up dimensions of 40mm make it a good choice for those who felt the former models were too small. That said, 40mm is still a very comfortable and manageable size. The stainless steel case opens up the dial for a more spacious layout, with blue and red accents seen on the small second sub-counter at 6 o’clock and off-white Arabic numerals that illuminate in the dark. The case of the steel version features a crown stamped with the Oris logo and a sapphire crystal glass front with anti-reflective treatment applied to both sides. The caseback too is crafted from sapphire crystal, affording a clear view of Oris’ Calibre 401, equipped with a power reserve of 120 hours and an impressive 10-year warranty and service interval. Integrated with 50-meter water resistance and a discreet stag beetle imprinted on the underside of the model’s Cervo Volante deer leather strap (a reference to the meaning behind the Italian leather brand) the new Oris Wings Of Hope Limited Edition watch in steel is, without a doubt, a highly collectable piece for 2022.

The 18ct yellow gold version of the Oris Wings Of Hope Limited Edition watch is exclusive to just 100 pieces worldwide and features the same design albeit for the gold-coloured Arabic numerals to match the solid 18ct yellow gold colour of the case. The model boasts a white dial with the same blue and red accents on the small second scale. The numerals are also trimmed in a contrasting dark colour.

The CEO for Wings of Hope, Bret Heinrich, expresses the importance of Oris’ support for this year’s 2022 mission: “I am incredibly grateful and honoured to be working with one of the world’s leading watchmaking companies. Ours is a close and committed partnership to change the world. And I believe there is much more to come. What impresses me most about Oris is its commitment to making the world a better place. Our brand identity is very important to us, and working with such a highly respected brand that is so perfectly aligned with our mission is a very special gift to us and hopefully to the world.”
