NEW: The Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante Watches

Oris’ first major release of 2022 is the new Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante – a collaborative timepiece that extends on the brand’s Change for the Better campaign with a selection of sustainable deer leather straps.

We know the changes we need to make to sustain our planet and how to make them, but are we actually making them? Oris is. As part of its Change for the Better campaign – an ongoing project that has seen the famous Swiss watchmaker clean the Hangang River in South Korea and reserve the Coral Reefs of the Florida Keys - Oris will now bid to raise awareness of Switzerland’s forest ecosystems.

Conservation has well and truly become part of the fabric of Oris. It is just one of the many qualities that make the manufacturer so special and unique. And whilst other leading brands have been doing their bit for the planet, no other company jumps into sustainability with a whole-hearted “we care” attitude quite like Oris. It has worked closely with the Coral Restoration Foundation, the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, and took part in the World Clean-Up Day event. Now it has partnered up with handcrafted leather goods company, Cervo Volante.

Since Oris was founded back in 1904, the stunning Waldenburg Valley – an almost enchanted blanket of deep forest greens and earthy tones – has served as a backdrop to the company’s elite team of skilled watchmakers and craftsmen. Nature has been in the veins of the brand from day one, so no company understands more than Oris that Change for the Better begins at home. The message is quite clear – respect and nurture the environment that surrounds you. The release of the new Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante watches focuses on the manufacture of its watch straps made from sustainable deer leather.

Deer skin straps

The story behind the Oris and Cervo Volante collaboration points to the legal operation of deer culling, which takes part in Switzerland every year to control numbers. That said, up until 2017, very little has been done about the sheer waste of a natural by-product to come of these yearly culls. So two entrepreneurs, Kadri Vunder Fontana and Conny Thiel-Egenter took the deerskins and made footwear and accessories from them. It has recently crossed paths with Oris when Cervo Volante approached the watchmaker and asked about a possible collaboration, realising that their views on sustaining the planet were a shared passion with the renowned watch brand.

Cervo Volante straps promote low-impact methods. These beautiful leather straps tell a story by way of including the imperfections that have occurred during the life of each deer – a process that many manufacturers would instantly discard. This unique and respectful approach reduces waste. Each strap is manufactured in one of the last two remaining tanneries in the whole of Switzerland, practising 100 per cent vegetable tanning processes within its facility.

The Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante

There are three new models released under the new Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante name. Each one is inspired by Alpine hues on a gradient dial and comes presented with a cardholder and pouch made from the same deer leather material. The collaboration suggests a potential partnership between the two companies for future innovations as well, plus Oris fans will be pleased to hear they won’t have to fight over securing one of these three beautiful designs – the timepieces are not limited editions. The new trio comprises a grey dial model, a blue model and a green iteration.  All three measure a very compact 38mm diameter and are crafted from stainless steel in Oris’ familiar three-piece case construction. With 50-meter water resistance and a strong domed pane of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass to protect each of the three dials - these watches promise robustness, disguised in elegant case proportions and wrapped in the much-loved aesthetics of the collectable Big Crown Pointer Date design. A screwed stainless steel caseback incorporates a see-through sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature within its structure, enabling you to admire the performance of the self-winding Oris 754 movement whilst at work.

The Oris 754 movement is, of course, based on the Sellita SW200-1, which performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a 38-hour power reserve. If you weren’t already familiar with this self-winding engine, rest assured that it has featured throughout the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date collection over the years. Its bi-directionally rotating rotor can also be caught sight of through this transparent glass bottom, together with traditional Swiss decoration.

The three new Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante watches offer a somewhat vintage-inspired feel in their discreet 38mm cases. The main case is brushed, the lugs are tapering and sloping, and each model is topped with the trademark fluted bezel that has reigned throughout the Big Crown Pointer Date series. Since the watch has been downsized, there are some notable differences in the layout of the familiar dial. The railroad date track around the periphery of the display remains unadjusted, however. The Arabic numeral hour markers have been ever-so-slightly slimmed down which cleverly prevents the dial from feeling over-cluttered. A pale khaki fauxtina luminescent material is used for the signature cathedral hands that occupy the centre of the display, set against three Alpine shades that evoke the landscape that Oris takes inspiration from. The hunter green dial mirrors the rich forestry of the valley and melts into a handsome black around the edge, the blue glaciers are interpreted in the cool mottled turquoise tones of the blue gradient variation, whilst the mountains are captured by the stony grey dial with a concrete grey centre, dispersing into an almost black outer dial. These muted tones are interfered by a contrasting two-pronged date hand. The grey-coloured dial ref 754 7779 4063-Set 07 5 19 12 features a deep crimson red pointer tip, the blue ref, 754 7779 4065-Set 07 5 19 13 features a duck-egg blue pointer hand tip, and the green variant ref. 754 7779 4067-Set features a brighter green shade for its date hand. All three Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Cervo Volante watches are fitted on a heavily textured deer leather strap – the grey dial featuring a deep coffee brown colour, the blue dial offering a light golden strap and the green dial fitted on a rich caramel brown-coloured strap.
