NEW: Baume & Mercier Riviera Automatic Watches

Four new automatic versions of the highly desirable Baume & Mercier steel sports watch have launched. Meet the new Baume & Mercier Riviera Automatic watches, presented in a choice of dial colours and embodying the instantly recognisable 12-sided bezel.

The seventies is an era remembered for its bell-bottomed trousers, technological innovations and, for some industries, a time of economical struggle. If you’re a devoted watch connoisseur, however, and you’re lucky enough to have experienced the steel sports era that dominated the watch industry at that time, you’ll be more than familiar with the Baume & Mercier Riviera watch. In fact, even if you’re a much younger luxury watch collector, you’ll have tried a few vintage steel sports watches on your wrist by now. If so, you’ll be able to appreciate how it feels to wear one.

The Baume & Mercier Riviera watch first launched in 1973. It followed the launch of the iconic Royal Oak watch by Audemars Piguet, signifying the bold leap of faith that very few manufacturers dared to take during the time. Now, it has returned from the past and celebrates the same recognisable style that first put the company on the map for creating superb, highly collectable timepieces. Its name takes inspiration from the French Riviera and its casually elegant lifestyle. Its steel case with an integrated bracelet broke traditional design codes during the 70s and has now been revived and renewed with four new models powered by automatic movements. These four iterations sit alongside two additional models powered by one of Baume & Mercier’s Baumatic movements and three ladies 36mm quartz-powered watches.

Three cases of the new automatic-powered watches are sized in a 42mm diameter and one is tailored to the female wrist with a 36mm diameter. Riviera watches by Baume & Mercier are characterized by their simplified dials, but these new models also feature an interchangeable strap-changing system that enables the quick switch over from a stainless steel bracelet to a leather alternative if desired. Let’s take a look at the four new models…

The three 42mm-sized Baume & Mercier Riviera watches come in three different dial options – a silver, blue and black colour. The unique décor applied to the surface of each dial is perfectly framed by a fixed dodecagonal-shaped bezel – one of the original features of the famous Riviera series. The rest of the case is streamlined to recreate the iconic look of the original steel sports watch. The wave-effect dial creates the perfect backdrop for a set of central hour and minute hands filled with Super-LumiNova. The central sweeping second hand stretches right out to the hour track, kissing a set of baton hour markers that have also been treated with the same luminescent technology. The 12 and 6 o’clock hour markers are represented by traditional Roman numerals whilst the Baume & Mercier Geneve lettering stands out in a black or silver font respective to the model’s dial colour.

Perfect for office use, the new automatic Baume & Mercier Riviera watches have been equipped with a legible date window at 3 o’clock, dressed against a white background to enhance readability. Experts at Baume & Mercier have chosen strong anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass to protect the surface of the black, blue and silver dials This same material is also used on the back of the case where a glimpse can be caught of the outfitted automatic movement at work. Other case features of the Riviera watch include fine-brushed and polished finishes and a height of 10.66mm.

The new automatic Baume & Mercier automatic watches are powered by a reliable Swiss-made self-winding movement. The Calibre Sellita SW 200 is a tried and tested movement that provides a 38-hour power reserve and beats at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also includes 26 jewels and traditional Swiss decoration that can be admired through the watch’s see-through sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature. The movement is protected inside the watch’s 100-meter water-resistant case which features integrated lugs and an interchangeable bracelet. This metal band completes the rugged, sporty-elegant aesthetic of the Baume & Mercier Riviera watch, with links executed in fine-brushed and polished finishes. A triple-folding clasp engraved with the Baume & Mercier logo firmly secures the bracelet to the wrist, with security push-pieces in a polished finish.
