Meet the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante Watch
Tuesday - 31 May 2022
There are so many quirky features to appreciate within the design of the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante watch, released for 2022. It’s such a handy travel companion that it almost seems impossible to consider that a luxury watch manufacturer hasn’t thought to design a GMT watch in this same way before. The Tonda PF watch collection by Parmigiani Fleurier has always defined itself as a family of wristwatches that takes the classic sports watch design with an integrated bracelet and puts the Parmigiani Fleurier spin on it. A distinct perception of elegance sets these watches aside from other bold and aggressive looking sports watches on the market. Underscoring this same elegant take on the Tonda watch – the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante timepiece marks yet another chapter in the brand’s success story.
The Tonda PF watch from Parmigiani Fleurier evokes a sleek silhouette on the wrist and features teardrop-shaped lugs and a knurled bezel, along with a textured dial and an integrated bracelet to name just a few of its most notable design codes. What has undoubtedly proven a challenge for Parmigiani Fleurier is keeping the understated elegance of the watch intact, whilst adding something altogether different to the design. But somehow, the brand does it with considerable grace.
Not the chronograph that many fans may have been expecting this year, maybe. But making up for that with a price tag that is considered incredibly reasonable, the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF watch is a GMT and a rattrappante function all rolled into one. Similar in characteristics to the brand’s Micro Rotor watch from the Tonda PF line, this new model shares the same bracelet design and the same knurled bezel crafted from platinum. It also boasts a stunning guilloche dial effect but comes in a thicker case depth to house the dimensions of the movement that powers. To do this, it has grown from 7.8mm to 10.7mm in depth. Its diameter, however, remains at a compact and entirely manageable 40mm. One key difference to note about the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante watch is that it goes without the date function.
Echoing the same shape as the push-pieces seen on the Tonda PF chronograph, the new GMT Rattrapante watch features a pusher at 8 o’clock. Its smooth polished and ergonomically formed profile proves effortless under the fingertips and is a neat, organic extension of the lugs themselves. Pressing this pusher adjusts the local time in one-hour increments. The adjusting of this hand, in turn, reveals another hand hidden underneath it to indicate home time. Of course, if you’re at home, both hands will be showing the same time and therefore the local hour hand is concealed behind the local time once more. Here is where the innovative design of the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante watch comes into its own because whereas a normal GMT watch with a prominent GMT hand would be cumbersome and useless when you’re staying in your local timezone, this new Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante travel watch creates a whole new concept around the GMT function, where all that is shown is purely what you need. To align the local hour hand with the home hour hand quickly and effortlessly, another pusher integrated into the 8 o’clock pusher can be pressed to catch the home hour hand up and conceal it. This Rattrapante function is the fast track way to do so, rather than individually pressing the 8 o’clock pusher in small increments. To accommodate this catch-up function crafted from 18ct rose gold, the crown is made larger in this new design.
Parmigiani Fleurier’s PF051 movement can be admired through the back of the Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante watch. Simply put, it’s the PF702 but with added functionality, minus the date aperture. Here a stunning 18ct rose gold micro-rotor to reflect the premium status of this luxury travel tool can be admired. The automatic PF051 movement performs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 48 hours. It also comprises a total of 207 components including 31 jewels. As for the rest of the details, the new GMT watch is crafted from satin-brushed and polished stainless steel and measures a diameter of 40mm. It features a knurled platinum bezel, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front, and a 60-meter water-resistant capability. Its Milano Blue dial is adorned with a barleycorn guilloche textured surface, 18ct gold rhodium-plated indices, skeletonised hands, and a cartouche PF logo at 12 o’clock. To complete its stylish look, the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante watch is fitted on an integrated stainless steel bracelet with matching satin-brushed and polished links, along with a folding clasp engraved with the Parmigiani Fleurier logo upon its surface.
Innovative and stylish, the design of the new Tonda PF GMT Rattrappante watch from Parmigiani Fleurier introduces a new form of timekeeping whilst on the go with its contrasting local and home time hour hands and a quirky built-in pusher within the crown that enables the watch to resume back to a simple no-date watch for regular wear when not travelling. It offers the best of both worlds – a travel companion and a dress watch that doesn’t feel like a travel watch until required.
