Thursday - 02 February 2023
Breitling welcomes a new line of six Chronomat watches to mark its role as exclusive luxury watch partner to all six nations and the Official Timing Partner to the Guinness Six Nations Rugby Championships – the annual international men's rugby union competition between the teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.
Breitling is releasing six new striking Chronomat watches to mark its role as the Official Timing Partner to the oldest international rugby tournament in the world that now goes by the name of the Guinness Six Nations Rugby Championships. The partnership between Six Nations Rugby and Guinness underscores an ongoing commitment to international rugby. Guinness works closely with Six Nations Rugby and upholds its designation as Official Responsible Drinking Partner to promote sensible and responsible drinking across all aspects of the championship. Meanwhile, Breitling will be supplying its timing devices to this tournament organised by the unions of the six participating nations. The Guinness Six Nations Rugby Championships is also responsible for the promotion and operation of the men's, women's and under-20s tournaments, and the Autumn International Series, as well as the negotiation and management of their centralised commercial rights.
A little about the Six Nations Rugby Championships
The Six Nations Rugby Championships has a history that stretches back over 150 years and has, within this time, produced many memorable moments. The successor to the Home Nations Championship (the first international rugby union tournament) initially comprised England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales between the years 1883–1909 but gained France in 1910 followed by Italy back in 2020. Breitling’s role also extends to the TikTok Women's Six Nations championship, the Autumn Internationals and the 2023 Rugby World Cup warm-up matches. The championships will begin on February 9th 2023, just in time for the release of these six new striking Breitling Chronomat watches to mark the birth of the new Chronomat Six Nations watch series.
The excitement is already building for hardcore rugby fans who are waiting in anticipation to follow the 2023 season to see who will be etched into sporting history by joining the Roll Of Honour. One thing that is for certain, however, is the popularity of the six new Chronomat models representing the six nations by Breitling that make up the world-famous rugby tournament – each one with its own character and an impressive new colourway.
Why the Chromomat?
The six new releases representing the Six Nations watch series by Breitling represent England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and France – winners of last year’s 2022 tournament. They all embody the key characteristics of the much-loved Chronomat watch, originally released back in 1942. By the time the Chronomat watch was being utilized as a timing instrument by Formula 1 teams, the Chronomat watch had already gained a huge following during the 1980s and 1990s with a reinvented design. Today, the Breitling Chronomat remains one of the brand’s most beloved watches and has been released in countless different ways over its lifespan, yet the distinctive bezel and rider tabs have become a key selling point for the watch, as have the unique Rouleaux bracelet designed especially for the series and the legible chronograph dial. Still worn as the ultimate stylised sports watch, the Chronomat legacy continues with these new Six Nations watches that are set to sell out rapidly, since each one is limited to just 150 pieces worldwide. Let’s take a look at each model in a little more detail.
The new Breitling Chronomat Six Nations watches
The Breitling Chronomat Six Nations England Limited Edition watch presents itself in a white and red dial to mirror the team’s colourway. The small second sub-counter located at 9 o’clock on the dial features the English Rose – an emblem first adopted by England during the War of the Roses in the 15th century. Its red and green hues add a subtle hint of colour to the display, whilst the emblem is also repeated on the reserve of the case, shown emblazoned upon the surface of the watch’s sapphire crystal glass caseback, exposing the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 movement. The hands of the chronograph sub-counters are also executed in red, as well as the central chronograph second hand.
The Breitling Chronomat Six Nations Ireland Limited Edition watch, also crafted from the same robust stainless steel, features a shamrock green dial with silver-filled chronograph counters at the usual location of 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The small second sub-dial features the shamrock emblem adopted by the Irish rugby team, which can be viewed on the back of the case. Like the other five watches, it features a date window at 6 o’clock.
The Breitling Chronomat Six Nations Scotland Limited Edition watch, in deep blues to reflect the country’s flag, features the famous thistle design with a rugby-shaped motif at the centre. The model, like its siblings, is water resistant to 200 meters and features silver-filled chronograph counters offering a 30-minute and 12-hour totaliser. The central chronograph hand matches the blue colour of the dial and the model also measures the same 42mm diameter as the rest of the watches in this new series.
The Breitling Chronomat Six Nations Wales Limited Edition watch shows the time on a deep crimson red coloured dial with black-filled chronograph counters and a striking green central seconds hand. The baton indexes around the hour track and the hands have all been treated with luminous material. The 9 o’clock sub-counter reveals the Welsh rugby team’s emblem based on the Prince of Wales’s feathers. The heraldic badge is once again shown on the reverse of the watch where the caseback is crafted from the same cambered sapphire crystal glass used on the front of the watch, complete with layers of anti-reflective treatment applied to its surface. The watch is framed by a steel bezel with the iconic rider tabs located at the 15-minute locations.
The Breitling Chronomat Six Nations Italy Limited Edition watch features the country’s green, white and red colours across a blue display. The F.I.R. initials for “Federation of Italian Rugby” can be seen on the exhibition caseback whilst the sub-counter at 9 o’clock shows scrolls and laurels, finishing the tricolour shield. The watch, like the other five models, provides a useful power reserve of 70 hours courtesy of the Calibre 01.
Lastly, complete with the same instantly identifiable Roleaux bracelet, the Breitling Chronomat Six Nations France Limited Edition watch features a deep blue dial with silver-filled sub-counters and the red French rooster emblem at the 9 o’clock location.
Represented by the members of the seven-strong Breitling Rugby Squad, the new limited edition Breitling Chronomat watches for the Six Nations Championships will be seen stylized by winger George North representing Wales, Conor Murray, the scrum-half for Ireland, England prop Kyle Sinckler, Italy’s fly-half Paolo Garbisi, Scotland’s Hamish Watson and Stuart Hogg and France’s Gaël Fickou.
