Hands-on with the Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe “Pipin” Limited Edition

We’ve recently covered an article on three new striking Buceador Caribe watches from Cuervo y Sobrinos. Inspired by the waves lapping the coastlines of Cuba, these bold and vibrant diver watches came in colours of dark and light blue with brick-red accents seen on the central minute and second hands and a black version with yellow accents. All three models also featured contrasting shades of light blue, white and yellow to mark the first 15 minutes around the internal rotating bezel and offered an additional feature a 4 o’clock. This locking pusher ensured that the 2 o’clock crown used for rotating the internal diving bezel remained secure, whilst the 9 o’clock bezel on the other side could be used for adjusting the time and winding the crown. These three dynamic dive watches are inspired by the different tonalities of the Caribbean, where beautifully preserved coral reefs and mangroves that are abundant with sea life have become a popular destination for scuba divers. Before these three new Buceador Caribe watches were released, however, the Swiss watchmaker with Cuban roots released a special edition Buceador Caribe “Pipin” wristwatch, boasting a rich green design produced in collaboration with Pipin Ferreras – a Cuban free-diver.

Pipin Ferreras has been a friend of Cuervo y Sobrinos for some time and has recently begun working with the watchmaker to create a diver’s watch imbued with indisputable Cuban style. Buceador – the Spanish word for “diver” – is an apt name for this collection, which was launched just a couple of years ago and has become home to several watches inspired by the Caribbean waters that encircle the sun-kissed island where the multiple world record holder grew up. Like the recently released Buceador Caribe watches in dark blue, light blue and black – the green Limited Edition “Pipin” variant has bold indexes and hands that stand out in the dark thanks to plenty of Super-LumiNova treatment. The watch also features a complex case construction with crowns located in rather unconventional places. The 4 o’clock pusher locker is an innovative feature that ensures the 2 o’clock pusher, used to rotate the watch’s internal diver’s bezel, remains intact and safe from accidental adjustment whilst underwater. The pusher locker and the 2 o’clock crown are both executed in tones that match the accents of the dial, whilst the 9 o’clock crown on the other side of the case is used to adjust the time and wind the crown when needed.

The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watch is developed in a very similar way to the three diver’s watches we recently covered here. It features lugs, for example, that are broad and tapering, with a polished bevel that gives the Buceador watch a rounder (and less octagonal) shape. The case, crafted from stainless steel and measuring a 43mm diameter, has a steeply sloping polished bezel with a recessed bushed central caseband and raised polished edges. Water resistant to 200 meters, the back of the case has been specially engraved with an image of a scuba diver surrounded by a school of fish.

Flipping the Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe “Pipin” Limited Edition watch back over to its front, you get to appreciate the intense green tones of its stunning matte dial, enlivened with a blackened edge and orange accents that outline the sword-shaped minute along with the luminous pip on the second hand. An octagonal date window also resides at 6 o’clock. The hour track is represented in a mix of Arabic numerals and stick markers, giving the watch an athletic and sporty look, whilst a generous coating of Super-LumiNova on all the key features of the dial makes it easy to use this watch wherever and whenever. The “Buceador” lettering at 6 o’clock is perfectly matched in an orange colour to compliment the first 15 minutes of the diving bezel and the entire dial is protected by a strong piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass.

Inside the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe “Pipin” Limited Edition watch is the CYS 8126, based on the Soprod P024. It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations and produces a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement is concealed behind the engraved caseback and comprises a total of 25 jewels. The watch also comes fitted on a matching deep green rubber band with tone-on-tone stitching down the sides and an additional deep green calfskin strap. Alternatively, you might prefer the watch on a Milanese-style stainless steel mesh bracelet with a folding clasp designed by Staib.
