Introducing the Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe Watches
Friday - 09 June 2023
Cuervo y Sobrinos extends its Buceador Caribe watch collection with a dark blue, light blue and black model. They all feature contrasting elements and a pusher locker at 4 o’clock to ensure the crown used at 2 o’clock for rotating the internal bezel stays intact whilst diving
Cuervo y Sobrinos is the only Swiss watchmaker with Cuban roots, which makes its exquisite timepieces even more exceptional. It has used its vibrant past as a catalyst for its popular lines, the sporty and funky Buceador Caribe diver models being one of them. The Buceador has a complex case construction and attractive dial that captures the waves overlapping the shores of Cuba’s coastline and has now been released in three more colours as part of Cuervo y Sobrinos’ 2023 watch releases. The three new dial colours are a pale blue with aqua blue accents, a darker blue with red accents and a black with vibrant shots of yellow. The Buceador Caribe watch collection was only released two years ago, yet in this short space of time has become popular with those looking for a different take on the dive watch formula.
A complex case
The bold and vivid colours of the new 43mm Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe dive watches are inspired by the colours of the Caribbean and have a complex case construction. The lugs, for example, are broad and tapering, featuring a polished bevel that gives the Buceador watch a rounder (and less octagonal) shape. The case (stainless steel for the blue models and black PVD-coated steel for the black model) has a steeply sloping polished bezel with a recessed bushed central caseband and raised polished edges with an unorthodox layout of crowns. The 9 o’clock crown is flared and shallow-toothed and is used as the main winding crown that can also set the time. At 2 o’clock, the crown is rendered in a colour to match the model (blue or yellow) and controls the internal rotating bezel. Even more dynamic is the use of the locking pusher at 4 o’clock, used for keeping the bezel crown safe from accidental adjustments during diving. This feature is finished in red, blue or yellow to match its respective watch design. On the reverse of each case is a specially engraved motif featuring a scuba diver amongst a school of fish. The new Buceador Caribe diver watch from Cuervo y Sobrinos also offers a 200-meter water resistance for plenty of water-based activities.
Dials inspired by Cuban coastlines
Just like the case of the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe, the dials are equally just as fun and futuristic. The mix of Arabic numerals and chunky stick indexes around the hour track of the dial gives the watch an athletic feel, enhanced further by sword-shaped hands. The first 15 minutes of the diving scale are outlined in a different colour with each model – red for the deep blue model, white for the pale blue model and yellow for the black model. As promised of any dive watch, this Cuervo y Sobrinos dive watch is highly legible thanks to its splashy details and an octagonal date window at 6 o’clock. A dark brick-red outline around the minute hand and the luminous tip of the second hand is visible in both of the blue versions, while the black model features yellow in these places. Interestingly, the lighter blue version is the stand-out model against its stablemates here, since its colour has been taken from the water surrounding Cuba and put onto a degrade dial that melds into an intense black around the edge.
The new Buceador Caribe diver watches from Cuervo y Sobrinos are all powered by the Soprod P024 – an automatic movement that was developed as an alternative to the ETA 2824. It provides a 38-hour power reserve and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Each of the models is fitted with a rubber band – dark blue for the 2860.1BL model with light blue contrast stitching, pale blue rubber for the 2860.1LB model with white contrast stitching and black rubber for the 2860.3NY with yellow contrast stitching. These three watches also come supplied with a calfskin leather strap in the same colour, whilst the two blue versions can also be purchased on a Milanese stainless steel mesh bracelet from Staib. The metal bracelet alternative is strong but flexible and gives the dive watches an overall subtle vintage-inspired feel.
