Exploring the new TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands Watches

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands watches continue the legacy of one of the brand’s most iconic luxury watches of all time. Not only infused with a strong sporty spirit, but the new releases also reinstate an important design element – legibility. An uncluttered and harmonious chronograph was the driving force behind Jack Heuer’s Carrera watch when he first developed the design back in 1962. Since then, its perfect proportions and uncompromised functionality have proven its worth as a daily beater, particularly the collection’s three-handed versions, which now extend the range further to offer a vast array of dials and features for both male and female collectors.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera watch releases

There are plenty of options to choose from when exploring the new Carrera watch collection. All of the models boast an integrated 100-meter water resistance and feature sapphire crystal glass exhibition windows on the back, which expose each respective movement, together with traditional Swiss decoration and finishes. The members of the new collection are a mix of black sunray snailed, blue and silver sunray brushed and white mother of pearl dials. Some are powered by the Calibre 7, some the Calibre 9, and others the Calibre 5 – all of which are based on ETA or Sellita movements that have featured throughout the Swiss brand’s catalogue over the years. There’s also a choice between straps – most of which feature the popular H-shaped stainless steel bracelet with a reformed thinner and lighter design that fits effortlessly and ergonomically to the shape of the wrist. Bevelled and domed anti-glare sapphire crystal glass fronts intensify a sporty-elegant look, whilst practical features across the dial are intended to promote clarity and legibility.

From the 41mm Day Date line, there are two black dial versions (one with rhodium-coated indexes and hands and the other with 5N rose gold coated indexes and hands), a silver version, and a blue version. All of these models boast a sunray snailed or sunray brushed dial, with a day-date feature positioned at 3 o’clock. The watches are powered by the tried and tested, Calibre 5 based on the architecture of the ETA 2824-2 movement, and offer a performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 38 hours. All but the silver model is completed on a stainless steel bracelet, which is instead featured on a classic-looking brown alligator leather band.

The new TAG Heuer Twin-Time Date watch sees the date aperture relocate to the 6 o’clock location for a more balanced and harmonious layout. The rich blue sunray dial features a silver and blue 24-hour track around the flange. The red arrow-tipped second time zone hand points to the additional 24-hour track, whilst the other central hands have been treated with Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping in the dark. With a busy on-the-go lifestyle, Gosling’s need for a daily companion with an additional time zone function speaks to the requirements of the modern man. The ergonomically formed H-shaped links are the perfect fit for the male wrist, enclosing with a folding clasp and double push-button mechanism.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera line also includes four new 39mm Date watches in a choice of black, blue, and silver dials once more. The dial elements in these time and date watches are the same as the 41mm Day Date models. The two sunray snailed black dials offer a choice of rhodium-coated or 5N rose gold coated indexes and hands. There’s also a blue and silver sunray brushed dial option, however, this time the silver is fitted on a stainless steel bracelet. Unlike the Twin-Time model, which is powered by the Calibre 7, these Carrera Date 39mm watches are powered by the same engine as the Day-Date models – the Calibre 5 – with a rapid date correction and an oscillating mass that can be admired through a sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature.

Lastly, there are four 29mm versions of the time and date Carrera – this time suited to the female wrist with a slender profile, a H-shaped stainless steel bracelet and a reliable Calibre 9 at their centres. The models come in a white mother of pearl dial or blue sunray dial option – each one is offered with baton indexes or diamond dot indexes for the hour track, yet all four feature the date located at the south of the dial.

The message behind the TAG Heuer Carrera watch

So, what is TAG Heuer trying to say about the new Carrera Three Hands watch collection? Well, it's like Nicholas Biebuyck, Heritage Director at TAG Heuer says;

Legend has it that TAG Heuer’s obsession with readability started in 1958 when Jack Heuer dropped from first to third in a Swiss rally he was competing in because he was unable to read the dashboard timer correctly. After that, Jack decided to focus on and improve this specific pain point, and he embraced his love of modern design to create an incredibly legible watch. This is the reason why the Carrera launched in 1963 looks already radically different from any other watches the company had produced before. You can see in the Carrera a focus on the typography and the desire to explore the purest form possible. Its design language is so clear and minimal that there are only three lines of text on the watch dial: Carrera – Heuer – Swiss Made - removing any risk of getting confused or distracted by superfluous decorations.”

The new releases have come at a time when TAG Heuer is welcoming a new ambassador to the family. Ryan Gosling – the Oscar-nominated La La Land actor - is always seeking to challenge himself. Together, the actor and watchmaker share a passion for boundary-pushing, fearlessness and motorsports. The brand’s CEO Frédéric Arnault explains a little further;

“We are thrilled to announce Ryan Gosling as TAG Heuer global ambassador, for his first-ever brand partnership. A star since his early days, he has grown to become an icon – one both enigmatic and inscrutable. He is a true artist who chooses his projects with utmost care and dedicates himself to them like no other, not only shaping his character but the entire creative direction. The movie Drive represents the strongest link with who we are today, and we are excited about the creative projects we have together,”.
