Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover x Elliot Watch Review

Two British powerhouses unite in Elliot Brown’s latest watch release: the Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover x Elliot watch. Attired in durable and stealthy gunmetal PVD stainless steel and carefully detailed with subtle design cues relating to Land Rover vehicles, this special edition collaboration watch perfectly embodies the tough, adventurous, and performance-driven philosophies of both the British watch manufacturer and British car brand.

Since 1948, Land Rover has been engineering reliable and robust 4x4s that represent true 'breadth of capability' across the model range. In keeping with Land Rover’s capability and durability, the new Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover watch is based on the timepiece brand’s original Holton Professional collection, a series of outdoor instruments previously issued as military equipment to a specialist unit. It was Elliot Brown’s natural authenticity and no-nonsense, tried and tested features that persuaded Land Rover to collaborate. Unlike many watch manufacturers, Elliot Brown test every single watch in a water depth of at least 200 metres and their Holton Professional model in particular undergoes several stringent military evaluations before making it onto the wrist.

David Sparks, Jaguar Land Rover’s Head of Licensing and Product, said: “Elliot Brown’s proven expertise makes them the ideal partner for Land Rover. The result is a stunning-looking watch that lives up to legendary Land Rover attributes of capability, durability, design and engineering excellence.”

The Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover x Elliot Special Edition guarantees extraordinary levels of toughness with a case machined from solid 316L marine grade stainless steel, a material used widely in the engineering industry for its durability properties and characterful patina it develops after years of hard use. The stainless steel has then been treated with a toughened layer of gunmetal PVD, a process which Elliot Brown suggests takes up to 12 hours. It seem the lengthy process is worth it with the gunmetal PVD delivering a hardness of 1200HV. Topping the case is a matching PVD bezel with unidirectional capability and a unique hobnail texture which extends onto the upper surface to allow for easy grip when wearing thick gloves or for those situations when you have wet, muddy and slippery hands.

For measuring elapsed time, the bezel is engraved with clear 0 to 60 markings and detailed with glow in the dark Superluminova for instant legibility in all lighting conditions. Secured at the 4 o’clock position, the case of the Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover delivers a triple seal crown recessed into the case to ensure ultimate protection. It’s screw down capacity helps assure the special edition’s 200 metre water resistant rating alongside the 2 millimetre thick sapphire crystal glass housed above the dial. The glass also assures easy readability with anti-reflective coating.

Turn the Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover x Elliot Special Edition watch over, and a deeply detailed case back reveals the iconic Land Rover logo at the centre superimposed over contour lines traced from Tyneham Cap on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. The lines are also pleasantly marked with spot heights above sea level.  Additionally, Elliot Brown have ensured the Land Rover mark is always perfectly horizontal by bolting down the case back – something not many watch brands seem to do. Hidden behind the case back is the quartz movement suspended via elastomers for immense shock protection.

For us, the real centrepiece of the Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover watch is the dial which has been carefully designed to include subtle accents relating to the car manufacturer’s history. In particular, the dial honours the year 1948 when the first Land Rover watch launched. This is done in the smallest, yet most spectacular ways such as highlighting the numerals 19 and 48 in orange on the minutes track and through the hexagonal detailing and the 'squircle' shaped hour markers. Like the bezel, the dial is adored with Superluminova markings for instant clarity.

To complete the Elliot Brown Holton Land Rover Special Edition, two straps are delivered to secure it to your wrist. The first is an EPDM rubber strap which is hypoallergenic and resistant to seawater, UV rays and extreme cold temperatures. The second is a sporty black and orange anti-bacterial webbing strap. Both are fitted with the brand’s patented buckle and are easily interchangeable thanks to the easy strap change tool included in the bespoke recycled EVA storage case.
