Friday - 05 April 2019
A faithful tribute to a fifties classic was launched by Breitling at Baselworld 2019. The Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-edition continues Breitling’s proud legacy that started over 60 years ago. Back in 1952, Breitling designed the iconic Navitimer that was fastened to the wrist of pilots during some of aviation’s pivotal moments due to the circular slide rule that enabled them to make flight calculations whilst in the air. Set to be the first of many, Breitling bring their first re-edition timepiece capturing the smallest of details for an authentic recreation of one of the most respected early Navitimer's designed in 1959.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary since this iconic Navitimer was originally launched, the new design is limited to 1959 pieces in reference to the exact year. Each is engraved on the caseback with the number out of 1959 for a special, finishing touch.
Breitling fans can own a piece of their favourite brands heritage by wearing one of the legendary designs that is iconic in the watchmaking industry. Recognised for its association with the commercial aviation market, that back then was growing considerably, the new design appeals to a new generation who value Breitling’s legacy and are nostalgic for the past wearing stylish, timeless designs that charm the most sophisticated of gents.
Like its predecessor, the 2019 edition has an all-black dial with tone-on-tone sub dials. Also, emulating one of the signature features of the original, Breitling is written in capital letters above an unsigned winged logo. The stunning rotating beaded bezel featuring 94 beads to be precise is another exact replica of its ancestor. It doesn’t stop there; the new release brings back the 40.9mm stainless steel case, including the familiar lugs profile and finish and the highly noted circular slide rule that sits underneath the high-domed acrylic glass.
The only difference to the 1959 model is that the water resistance has been increased to 30 metres and the addition of the hand painted Super-LumiNova coating that allows for the dial to be read in restricted lighting. However, Breitling paid close attention to the colour of the luminescent material of earlier watches to create an authentic feel. Also, the hand-finishing adds to the retro aesthetic.
To power the 2019 creation, Breitling designed a new hand-wound movement to pay respect to the earlier Navitimer. Manufactured in-house, the new Breitling Manufacture Caliber B09 mechanical movement take its cues from the brands Manufacture Caliber 01 COSC-certified chronometer. There are lots of new plans for the new movement as it will be the go to caliber for up and coming hand-wound historical re-editions.
