A Review of the SEVENFRIDAY M2-04 Whisky Watch
Tuesday - 07 March 2023
The SEVENFRIDAY M2-04 Whisky watch personifies a distilled essence of the company’s renowned watchmaking in the form of a whisky-coloured timepiece offering an unusual reading of the passing hours and minutes.
If you want to stand out from the crowd with your unique taste in luxury watches, you couldn’t find a more off-the-wall luxury watch brand than SEVENFRIDAY. The company was born a decade ago and in that short space of time has redefined the rules of modern watch-wearing, so much so, that these instruments don’t even look like watches. SEVENFRIDAY watches are powered by Japanese movements, mainly those manufactured by Citizen-owned company, Miyota. The models from the brand’s various collections are inspired by machinery, engineering and architecture, with their large square-shaped cases that began as two key collections; the P-series and the M-series. Gradually the company’s online catalogue has evolved to offer so much more in the way of forward-thinking, futuristic timepieces that there is really no other brand that comes even close to SEVENFRIDAY.
Paying homage to some of the brand’s finest horological innovations, SEVENFRIDAY has released a 10-year anniversary watch that is inspired by various spirits distilled from malted grain. The SEVENFRIDAY M2/04 watch, nicknamed “The Whisky”, is limited to just 300 pieces worldwide and, you guessed it, makes some aesthetical references to the tasty tipple. Here, the malted grain-inspired elements take the form of a bouchonne brass animation ring and a set of bronzed screwed-down arms seen on the dial, bolting down a brushed silver-coloured centrepiece endowed by the SEVENFRIDAY cartouche.
Starting with the basics, the new SEVENFRIDAY M2/04 Whisky watch measures a 47mm diameter, which in terms of square-shaped watches is very beefy. Make no mistake, these watches pack a punch on the wrist, so if you’re looking for a square-shaped men’s watch that measures smaller on the wrist, turn to something like the TAG Heuer Monaco or a Nomos for something a little more refined and dressier. The watch has been crafted from stainless steel and is topped with a piece of sapphire crystal glass that promises a clear view into the dial thanks to its crisp anti-reflective properties. The watch is also water resistant to 100 meters and features a caseback engraved with the brand name and the limited edition number, together with a luxuriously decorated brass SEVENFRIDAY logo with decorative finishes.
Now, back to the dial of the new SEVENFRIDAY M2/04 Whisky watch. It features a multi-layered sandwich effect display. The hours and minutes are read from left to right at the 3 o’clock location, providing a unique way to tell the time. There are different metals and finishes to admire throughout the dial of this new SEVENFRIDAY watch. A total of 14 parts make up the dial. These include a black dial with a grooved finish, a silver-coloured centrepiece held into place by three bronzed arms and a radiating 7F logo that emanates with pride from the core of the display. These features are capped by a sapphire crystal glass front that has been treated with anti-reflective technology. The “Aged 10 Years” lettering at the centre of the dial is a nod to the brand’s 10th anniversary.
Inside the new SEVENFRIDAY M2/04 Whisky watch is the Miyota 8215. The Japanese-manufactured automatic movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours once fully wound and sits within a 30-meter water-resistant housing. This case is also a mix of materials and finishes. The polished stainless steel bezel of the watch has a grooved section that runs around the entire dial. This grooved gully has been filled with black Berlac paint, adding a stunning level of detail to the watch. In addition to this, the animation ring that runs around the middle body of the entire case whilst sitting underneath the bezel has been crafted from bouchonne brass, evoking the colour of distilled whisky and acting as a metaphor for the brand’s 10-year anniversary and the distillation of its fine watchmaking over those years.
Attached to the case of this new SEVENFRIDAY M2/04 Whisky watch is a brown straight-cut suede calfskin leather band with a stainless steel buckle for a comfortable and practical fit. The new model from the M2 series of SEVENFRIDAY watches is a sure conversation starter.
