A Look at the Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Turtle Special Edition
Saturday - 04 March 2023
A few weeks will rarely go by without Seiko, one of the world’s most prolific watchmakers, releasing a new addition to one of its popular collections. Just two weeks into the new year and Seiko announced two new additions to the Seiko Prospex watch series to kickstart 2023 – each one inspired by the colours and inhabitants of a tropical lagoon. The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle watch is a solid and robust companion that, as with all watches from the Seiko Prospex series, is designed to stand extreme conditions. Meet the new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle SRPJ35K1 watch.
The Seiko Prospex line is huge and is home to a vast array of solid, robust and incredibly tough sports watches and dive watches for every kind of eventuality. Unlike the even larger Tuna variation that was released alongside this “Tropical Lagoon” Turtle watch, the model is not so imposing on the wrist and measures in at a 45mm diameter. But if that still sounds on the large size, the Seiko Prospex 1968 Re-interpretation that was released last year may be a little more to your liking. It was the thinnest ever Turtle watch, measuring a mere 41mm diameter, which in “Seiko Turtle” terms is very much on the small side.
If you’re new to the Seiko Prospex watch collection, here’s a quick run-down of the key characteristics offered in the watches from this collection. The Prospex name means “Professional Specifications” and the collection marks many firsts. The Prospex was the first to feature a version in lightweight titanium, the first to house a quartz movement as a professional diving watch and the first to offer a hybrid analogue digital display. The line is not limited to just dive pieces alone, but this new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle watch certainly has aquatic aspirations with its lagoon-inspired design that takes on the emerald green and marine blue colours of the lagoon and its inhabitants. Let’s take a closer look…
The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle watch SRPJ35K1
The Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” reference SRPJ35K1 is similar in many ways to its Hybrid Diver’s counterpart but has been crafted entirely from stainless steel as opposed to a mix of stainless steel and black plastic. Its unidirectional rotating bezel is a safety feature that proves indispensable for professional divers since it rotates only in the counterclockwise direction, thus eradicating the risk of dive time becoming accidentally extended whilst underwater. The bezel also boasts the easy grip frilled edge and features the first 15 minutes marked out in a stunning emerald green colour. The rest of the 60-minute dive scale is represented in a marine blue colour, whilst the white markers have also been treated with the brand’s Lumibrite material to assist with timekeeping in the dark.
The black dial of the new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle watch is home to an emerald green coloured minute hand that matches the green hue on the bezel. It also features a luminous coated central hour hand and an hour scale represented by trapezoid and circular indexes that have been treated with Lumibrite. In addition to this, the dial features a useful day and date feature for tracking the days of the month.
The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle watch is 200-meter water resistant which provides you with ample depths to play around with. The case is equipped with a screw-down crown to assist with a dry internal environment for the automatic movement to perform in.
The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Turtle watch is powered by the Calibre 4R36, which was released back in 2011 and has featured affluently throughout the Seiko Prospex watch series. It comprises 24 jewels and performs at 21,600 vibrations per hour whilst also providing a power reserve of 40 hours once fully wound. The watch is completed on a rugged stainless steel bracelet with a mix of satin-brushed and polished steel finishes. It encloses against the wrist with a three-fold clasp and a secure lock engraved with the Seiko name.
