Limited to just 1,786 pieces worldwide, the Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule Moonphase watch pays references to the year that Jacques Balmat reached the summit of Mont Blanc and pays homage to the Mer de Glace glacier found there with a special layered ice-effect dial texture achieved via a special stamping tool.
Founded in 1906, Montblanc - a watch manufacturer known across the globe for its finely crafted timepieces – was named after the famous Mont Blanc mountain. The peak of the mountain has become a symbol of prestigious craftsmanship and stands for the brand’s quest to strive only for the best, not only in its beautiful handmade mechanical timepieces but also its luxury writing instruments, exquisite leather goods and other luxury lifestyle products. The new Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule Moonphase watch is part of a trio of timepieces that were released last year. All three evoke a layered ice effect on their dial, achieved via a unique stamping tool. The Montblanc emblem created back in 1913 represents a bird’s eye view of the mountain peak with its six glacial valleys and is the very same emblem that inspired the first Star Legacy watch from Montblanc, born in 1997. Thanks to a new creative direction and some beautiful fine finishes, the Star Legacy continues today with this moonphase model, released alongside a chronograph version and a time and date iteration.
The new Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule Moonphase watch measures the same 42mm diameter as the chronograph version. The case has been crafted from stainless steel and embraces the design codes of the collection with a deep blue dial colour inspired by the sky at dusk when an intense blue shade falls upon the glacier as the moon rises and the stars begin to shimmer. This time of the day is referred to as the “Blue Hour” – a time that also marked the moment that Jacques Balmat reached the summit of Mont Blanc at 18.23 pm on August 7th, 1786. The year is also referenced in the limited number of timepieces available. The moonphase model, along with the chronograph and date watch is all exclusive to just 1786 pieces each worldwide.
The entrancing blue shade of the dial seen in the Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule Moonphase watch is enhanced further by a unique glacial-inspired effect. The layered ice texture achieved for the surface of the dial is carried out using a special stamp that recreates the glacial texture found at Mont Blanc, namely the Mer de Glace – the main glacier found there. When Balmat went on his quest to reach the summit of Mont Blanc, he went in search of gold. For this reason, the dial of the Star Legacy Blue Capsule Moonphase watch is also adorned with rose golden accents that elevate the timepiece to a sophisticated level, constituting a companion that pairs well with elegant and formal attire. The golden elements are seen in the hour track on the dial, represented in Arabic numerals and also the hands of the display, which are feuille-shaped to exude an elegant stance against their rich blue backdrop. A minute track surrounds these features in dot indexes that can be read clearly, despite their subtle shade, managing to meld into the blue tones of the dial very tastefully.
Opposite the Montblanc Automatic lettering at 12 o’clock on the dial of this Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule watch, a moonphase indicator can be admired in deep blue and rose golden tones. A date ring surrounds this indicator, enabling you to keep track of the days of the month easily. The moon phase indicator shows you the exact positioning of the moon each night in the sky, whilst a crescent-shaped tip on a blue-coated hand points to the surrounding date numerals. These features are protected by a piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that shields the surface from unintentional knocks and bumps.
Overall, the form of the new Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule Moonphase watch is inspired by original Minerva pocket watches used during the beginning of the 20th century. The pebble-shaped case has been beautifully polished and is integrated with a water-resistant rating of 50 meters. It holds the Calibre MB 24.31 which oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and produces a power reserve of 42 hours once fully wound. The movement is put on show through a transparent caseback crafted from sapphire crystal glass adorned with the Montblanc logo in gold-coloured lettering.
