Seiko Introduces the New 5 Sports SNXS Watches With a Classic Sports Aesthetic

Welcoming the new Seiko 5 Sports SNXS watches in dial colours of “Beige Chinos”, “Blue Rinse” and “Deep Black Wash”. The models feature a modified bracelet, improved water resistance, and new case features.

The Seiko 5 Sports Genre

If you’re looking for a robust sports watch powered by an automatic movement, the Seiko 5 Sports watch is a great option. The models from this line developed by the Japanese brand are renowned for their exceptional workmanship, not to mention their affordable prices. The collection celebrates automatic watches for every style and a design that has become a mainstay in the company’s catalogue since the 1960s. The typical features found in watches from the Seiko 5 Sports watch collection are a day and date function located at the 3 o’clock position on the dial, straight hands and stick hour markers. Although all of the watches are sporty, different variations are present. You can choose from military watches and pilot watches, all of which promise the remarkable mechanical accuracy of an automatic movement that relies on the motion of the wrist. Within the range are a total of five sub-categories. These comprise the Sport, Suit, Specialist, Sense and Street styles.

All of the models from these respective families follow the same blueprint of the 5 Sports watch collection. The simplest of all sub-collections is, of course, the Sport, which offers pilot’s watches and dive watches with polished and satin-brushed effects across their stainless steel cases. Then, there is the Suits line, which features dive watches with colourful dials. Specialists at the Japanese brand pair these dials with mesh-style stainless steel bracelets for an eye-catching finish. If playful and colour are concepts that pique your interest, though, you should look towards the Street and Sense lines, while the Specialist line features classic dive watch styles for those with a preference for retro water-friendly models.

A New Classic Sporty Design

One category of 5 Sports watch, however, sits in a class of its own. The Seiko 5 Sports SNXS series. These watches adopt the same design as the Seiko 5s but are built to fit the theme of a classic sports watch with 70s-esque details. Models from the Seiko 5 Sports watch category must also tick a series of specifications. They must be made from solid stainless steel and fitted with a matching bracelet, they must feature a recessed crown, be powered by an automatic movement, and have adequate water resistance, not to mention a day-date complication.

The Seiko 5 Sports SNXS Improvements

The new additions to the Seiko 5 Sports SNXS line have some modifications worth noting. To begin with, they now offer a water-resistant capability of 100-meters as opposed to their former 30-meter water-resistant ratings. Also, the middle case section of these watches now takes on a brushed finish instead of featuring a polished execution. What has stayed the same are the sizes of these watches. They remain at a diameter of 37.4mm, making them a great unisex option amongst Seiko enthusiasts. This manageable diameter is paired with a 12.5mm case depth. Seiko experts equip these new models with the same popular Hardlex glass top, keeping the price within a very affordable bracket for their quality. Lastly, a subtle redesign of the bracelet sees the addition of the triple folding buckle, complete with a push-button release mechanism.

A Trio of Intriguing Dial Colours

The three versions of the new Seiko 5 Sports SNXS range are the “Beige Chinos” version with a sunray brushed finish, a “Deep Black Wash” version with beige accents, and a “Rinse Blue” iteration. All three of the models feature faceted hour and minute hands that are wide and baton-shaped in profile. These elements are reminiscent of the retro timepieces that inspired this launch and sit alongside a central second hand executed in a vibrant orange colour. All three of these models share the same colour, making it incredibly easy to track the time in conditions that limit visibility. As well as these hands, the baton markers around the hour track features in all three models are all treated with Super-LumiNova material to assist with legibility in the dark. The material is charged by light, which energises the electrons. When these electrons get excited, they create a photophoresent glow. These luminescent elements on the respective black, blue and beige models, are protected by a strong piece of Hardlex glass, as is the day date feature located at 3 o’clock.

Inside the case of these new SNXS watches from the Seiko 5 Sports range is the Calibre 4R36. The movement is capable of an accuracy of +45 / - 35 seconds per day, along with a power reserve of 41 hours. The movement can be admired through the back of the case where Seiko specialists equip the case with an exhibition feature. Size-wise, the case of these new models measures 37.3mm in diameter – a great size for the brand’s unisex audience or anyone with a smaller wrist size. A 12.5mm depth also provides nice proportions for the wrist. The three watches are paired with a sophisticated stainless steel bracelet, complete with the triple folding clasp as aforementioned. Collectors can make use of the improved 100-meter water-resistant case, paired with its undeniable sporty design.

The Takeaway

The new Seiko SNXS watches are bound to be welcomed by fans of the Seiko 5 Sports watch collection. The line, after all, has been known for its reliability for over 50 years, not to mention its durability, value and performance. All five of the defining features of the esteemed collection are present and represent an evolution of the 5 Sports SNXS series. The classic sports theme is a great option for those looking for a timepiece that can be worn with formal attire, as well as a casual weekend wardrobe.
