Prepare for the New Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser Watch

A first in watchmaking. The new ProPilot X Calibre 400 watch from Oris displays the time on a laser-treated dial that brings out a natural phenomenon in the form of a stunning iridescent surface.

If you want your perception of a pilot’s watch to change, take a look at the new Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser watch. Its hard angles and killer titanium case offer a lot to like about the new model. The ProPilot watch collection by Oris is where all the fun is at. Large crowns, coloured dials and bezels reminiscent of blades in an aircraft Turbine – these watches deliver ideals of elegance and functionality. The various designs showcase some of the brand’s finest creativity in producing first-class pilot’s watches. Some of the highlights of the collection include the Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter, several limited editions, and the Calibre 400 models, like this latest iteration. It boasts an exquisite laser-engraved dial that is not to be missed.

If you’re big into collecting pilot’s watches, you shouldn’t look passed the Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser watch. The release is a technological beauty, ready to enthral its audience with a shimmering dial produced by a unique lasering technique. Even better – it has never been seen before in watchmaking, constituting a collectable feature worth getting your hands on.

The scarcity of this stunning ProPilot X Calibre 400 watch reflects Oris’ independence and its ability to innovate sustainably, without piggybacking on anyone else. Its high-profile collaborations with some of the world’s leaders in conservation and community action are commendable, to say the least. It is this same high-quality approach to manufacturing that has led to the carbon fibre case of the ProPilot and the accurate in-house Calibre 400. Each new idea is conceived at Oris before the brand’s designers and engineers see the final piece right through to the end of the production process.

The new Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser is produced with a research project that is affiliated with ETH Zurich University. This special partnership gives budding watch enthusiasts and entrepreneurial students the chance to develop their ideas and play a key role in the development of one of Switzerland’s most prestigious watch brands.

Like a beetle

To appreciate the full beauty of the new ProPilot watch by Oris, one must see and wear it. Made from titanium, the dial changes colour as light hits it from different directions. From blue to deep purple to rich green – the colours of this unique dial are reminiscent of an iridescent beetle’s shell. Surprisingly there is not one drop of colour in the design of this dial. Instead, it adheres to the phenomenon in nature, where red light waves are destroyed and just blue, violet and green shades can be seen. Thanks to surface manipulation, light is split into different colours creating a stunning rainbow effect. A separate laser process is then used for the hands, the minutes, the logo and the indices. This process creates a three-dimensional effect.

Beyond the breathtaking dial of this beautiful Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser watch is an in-house engineered movement that was brought into existence last year. The Calibre 400 sits within the model’s 39mm titanium case, performing at a rate of 28 800 vibrations per hour and delivering a total power reserve once fully wound of 120 hours. This impressive three-day power reserve will come in handy when wanting to alternate with another Oris favourite over the course of a weekend. The movement is showcased through an exhibition caseback crafted from sapphire crystal glass.

Thanks to this ultra-reliable movement the warranty of this new Oris watch is extended to 10 years and requires servicing every ten years too. When asked about the technological beauty of the watch, Richard Siegrist, who has developed the unique laser dial replied:

“Simply, it's creating beautiful things with highly technological processes. We're using state-of-the-art technology to bring out a phenomenon in nature, almost like biomimicry. There are many animals that create their colours with the same effect, a butterfly for example. Harnessing this effect to create such a unique dial is awesome”.

The new Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 watch is fitted on a multi-piece titanium bracelet with a folding clasp and is also 100-meter water resistant.
