RADO on the court

Rado’s links to tennis are inextricable. The brand has managed to entwine its love for timekeeping and professional tennis many times and has been sponsoring the sport for over three decades now. As a result, it is proud to support some of the brightest names in the industry. The watchmaker’s corner clocks have been spotted keeping track of every moment of the match, whilst its eminently stylish wristwatches prove to be the perfect tokens of success to celebrate victory with. The brand has sponsored the likes of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Austria’s Erste Bank Open, the Mexican Open, and the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad to name just a few. Rado’s relationship with Swiss tennis, in particular, has been strengthening since 2016. It includes a title sponsorship for the biggest Swiss mass sports event in tennis, the Rado Interclub Championships, where 30,000 tennis players participate. Rado further leverages these links with the sport with its YoungStars programme, supporting up-and-coming tennis players from all over the world.

In 2022, the brand announced that it would be welcoming British tennis player Cameron Norrie as an ambassador. The pro recently got knocked out of the Wimbledon championship after being defeated by Chris Eubanks in the second round. The South African who grew up in New Zealand has been representing Great Britain since 2013. Having been part of the watchmaker’s YoungStars programme, this next step as an ambassador for the brand cements the brand’s love for the sport. Whether wearing a Rado watch on or off the court, the brand believes that finding and experiencing the winning edge is what makes timekeeping with a Rado watch so special. To do this, Norrie has chosen the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Diver watch in the past but has recently unveiled a new collaborative design with the Swiss watch manufacturer.

The Captain Cook X Cameron Norrie timepiece was launched at the Hurlingham Club at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic week ahead of Wimbledon 2023 and is perfectly suited to the style and functionality of Britain’s number 1 men’s single player, who broke into the ATP top ten rankings last year. The perfect timing of the release before the grass-court season was grabbing every Rado fan’s attention. If you’ve been wanting to take a closer look at the watch, here are the details you’ll want to know.

The new Rado Captain Cook x Cameron Norrie Limited Edition watch

The new model for the Captain Cook collection measures a 42mm diameter and has been crafted from stainless steel. It has also been executed with a polished finish and features a matching steel crown and a polished steel rotating bezel filled with a polished green ceramic insert that echoes the lush green court of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The engraved numbers and markers have been finished in matte white Super-LumiNova material and match the material on the surface of the trapezoid hour markers and the central hour and minute hands.

Employing the faithful features of the Captain Cook watch design, the new Rado Captain Cook x Cameron Norrie Limited Edition watch has a large visible arrow-tipped hour hand and a luminous-tipped central second hand.

Having been involved with Rado for quite some time, Norrie announces that he’s had a great involvement in the design of the new limited edition Captain Cook watch. One of his favourite features of the design is the model’s dark green colour on the bezel and the fading shades of the gradient green dial towards the middle of the watch. In addition to this, the 3, 6 and 8 and 12 o’clock locations on the flange are represented by tennis balls, which honour the 15, 30, 40 scoring of the game.

These clever nods are combined with a special option for the straps. Three different interchangeable strap options are available for the new watch. These include a stainless steel bracelet, a black leather band or a sporty green and white striped NATO strap. The choice of three straps covers all options and tastes, with the black leather band donating a classic look on the wrist, and the striped NATO strap communicating a subtle retro charm.

Both the watchmaker’s complex watchmaking techniques and Norrie’s disciplined style on the court come together to represent the very best of the Captain Cook design. Both must be quietly organised and precise in their area of expertise to experience the pinnacle of success. Whilst Norrie’s sights are still set on a Wimbledon Championship, Rado’s CEO Adrian Bosshard couldn’t be more confident that the new limited Edition Captain Cook x Cameron Norrie has everything it takes for the professional player to secure a win:

“Tennis is the sporting expression of the very things that define Rado: relentless determination and our unbreakable will to test our limits again and again and Cameron perfectly represents this attitude. He is driven to deliver an inspired performance in every match, on every surface, against every competitor. It’s our responsibility to evolve with time, innovate with new materials and designs, look to cooperate with young dynamics like Norrie whilst looking after existing clients. We are attracting younger generation like the millennials, and today our biggest challenge is to produce enough timepieces to serve all the demands.”

The new Rado Captain Cook x Cameron Norrie Limited Edition watch holds the Calibre R763 at the centre of its 300-meter water-resistant case. The movement produces an impressive 80-hour power reserve making it a great weekend-proof model for alternating with other timepieces whilst always promising to keep accurate time. The watch is also supplied inside a green leather pouch adorned with Cameron Norrie’s signature and a limited edition certificate. The watch is limited to just 823 pieces worldwide – a nod to the tennis player’s birthday.
